Check what you’ve booked in advance. Don’t let the rep tell you that you only booked a compact SUV when you didn’t!

Definitely do a day trip (or 2 days) in Saint-Émilion or another wine village. We had amazing lunches at l'atelier candale, l'huitre box, hostellerie de plaissance and la terasse rouge. Drive to Arcachon or Anderson les Bains (only 90 minutes away from Saint-Émilion and only 50 minutes from bordeaux) for a day of seaside seafood. You can also the Dune of Pilat While you're on that coast. Definitely always buy a data card so you can easily google things to do or great restaurants near you. Helpful also when you're driving and want to find the nearest petrol station.

Don’t be in a hurry. Allow enough time. It’s a universal issue with car hire. Make sure all documents are available and are valid. Foreign visitors need passport and picture license. Check for damage thoroughly and don’t rush. Especially if it’s wet or dark. Ask them to move the car to a well lit position to inspect. Check the fuel gauge is full or as recorded. Fuel in Europe is VERY expensive. Take pictures with your phone of the car sides, front and back if there’s any damage on pick up. Do the same on return unless it’s inspected and a clearance receipt issued immediately. If you know there is new damage then allow enough time for the inspection and claim process. Missing a plane because of a car return admin delay is a very expensive business. Check on the rental return location prior to leaving and drop a pin on google maps, Waze or similar. This will save a lot of frustration and time when returning the car. Check on the typical shuttle bus timing, if applicable, especially if it’s likely to be very busy when you return. Allow enough time to avoid the stress of rushing through and forgetting something. Check the car thoroughly. Parking change, chargers, glasses etc. I’ve left them all behind previously.
