In 1958 Gatwick Airport was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II and was the world’s first airport with a direct railway link. Not too big, so much better than most airports, but does present more confusion than appears to be necessary by having shuttles between terminals that are sometimes necessary just to collect the bags that presumably came on the same flight that you disembarked.

Book your vehicle as soon as you make the airline reservation. Choose from Mid-sized which have the largest selections. Most rentals are Local vehicles, imports are limited. Get in earlier in the morning to have the largest fleet to choose from. Add the insurance coverage for minimal headache. Don't believe you will need to pay extra for Satellite Radio since there is Bluetooth and USB in every vehicle and almost all have Smart Phones. Fill up the tank before returning for a no-hassle return.

San Jose is an easy airport to arrive at. The car rental counters are across the street from the baggage claim area. The rental cars are parked in the building across the baggage claim area. You take an elevator to the floor each of the car rental companies have the cars. When you return the car--follow the well marked signs at the airport to get you back to the correct rental car area. Easy drop off procedure.

Small airport. Easy to navigate. Helpful info counter. Terminal B is a 10 minute walk from Terminal A. Don't try walking. Take the free shuttle bus. Car rentals are across the road from Terminal B. Returning your rental could be tricky. The Rental Return signage is not very prominent. It took me a second loop around the airport to find it and return my rental.

Make your reservation, way ahead of time. Get to the airport on time. Get a car big enough to take all your bags comfortably. Upgrade your car if cargo space is not enough Take good care of the car and park in a secure space overnight. Remember to remove all your bags from the rental car Hand the keys over to the attendant, to avoid locking them in

Please understand what kind of car and options you want BEFORE you get to the front of the line. My guess is that you just didn't wander off a street, to an airport rental car place looking for a vehicle. Had the "honor" of getting in line behind a couple that had NO clue what they were looking for. That poor worker on the other side of the counter----had to describe makes, models, sizes, options, costs, etc MULTIPLE times before the couple cleared the counter for my pre-arranged, decided reservation. My guess is that these people have driven a car before and are away that most models come with wheels, doors, and windows. I can understand the occasional "how much is an upgrade going to cost me" or "is there a special that I should know about", but the complete lack of preparation prior to getting to the front of the counter would be appreciated.

If you arrive early for your flight, there is a lovely waiting area before you go through Security to the Gates. Lighting is soft, and there are comfortable couches to relax or nap on. There are also tables for your snacks, and snack and drink machines available. Free wi-fi lets you check your messages in a peaceful setting. If you want to make a phone call, there is no background noise. My husband and I wound down there for half-an-hour before going through security, and it refreshed us for our flight.

San Jose is a fantastic airport to fly into if you're going to the Bay Area or headed to Santa Cruz and the central coast (you can't miss Big Sur!). Drive straight from SJ on Hwy 17 to Santa Cruz. Hit up Cat and Cloud for coffee on the East Side, and Verve on Fair if you check out the West Side. Head south and hit Big Sur. Hop on Highway 1 heading back north and if you please, go north passed Santa Cruz all the way to San Francisco. On the way back to San Jose it's always worth checking out East Bay (Oakland/Berkeley) but try to time it to miss traffic (literally impossible).

It was Denver where we rented the car, not San Jose. Anyway, it was our first visit to Denver and we found it to be a lovely city. I would suggest a tour of down-town with a visit to the Larimar Square area for a lunch or dinner. We enjoyed a visit to Union Station to see the beautiful work they did on the renovation of the old train station. We stayed in Boulder and used that as a base for skiing at Copper Mountain and touring old, small mining towns like Nederland and Lyons. All in all a great trip that was made better with a great rental from Holiday!
