Plan ahead as far as possible to get the best rates. Sticking with the same company for flights, hotels and car rentals makes things easier and more manageable. Be open minded to optional dates. Ask lots of questions. Look for things to do before you get there. Always tip the waiter.

No need for special insurance because your credit car covers the car and your own car insurance may cover - that you need to check. Be sure the gas tank is full/full before you leave. Don't forget the quick look at the car to be sure there is no damage.

Travel light. You will undoubtedly find that you really don't need very much when you get there. Be kind to those who are working hard to give you a pleasant experience. A smile and an understanding nod of the head to fellow passengers can make the difference between having a good or bad day. Be aware of your surroundings. You might possibly be able to open up a pathway for an overloaded traveler. Practice empathy for parents traveling with small children; they are already stressed and it helps to know that someone understands.

Check with the rental car company directly. Make sure you know if your rental car company is onsite or if it's a separate downtown location. I've made the mistake of renting from a downtown location only to discover this too late - at the airport rental car checkout desk. Use Gasbuddy to check on the current cost of gas in the city your renting a car in. I have had situations where the rental car companies actually are offering a pretty good price for gas in the area.

Sacramento airport looks renovated. This airport is clean and the TSA lines are not nearly as long as most airports. The shuttle services that drive you to your rental car are efficient and the drivers are very nice. I found many choices for coffee. I will use Sacramento as a hub in the near future.

Easy to get around and find places of interest. Friendly staff and places to eat. Easy to navigate car rental to and from airport. The return to the airport after the drop off was an excessive line waiting for the shuttle bus. Providing more buses to ensure arrival at the terminal on time would be great. Bathrooms are very clean and spacious.

Rent with Holiday Car Rentals they have best pricing. Prepaid card rental means no upselling on many added options. I recommend the car insurance especially only got a couple days with Holiday Car Rental it is 70 percent less per day than though car rental company. Never pre pay fuel option. Unless you plan your trip so you are driving on fumes when you go back to the rental car company you do not come out ahead. Avoid this option.

Make sure you have a smart phone with GPS to guide out of the airport to your destination! Also, plan to take some time to read the rental agreement carefully and then to go over the car and it's operation before you leave the lot. There are idiosyncrasies you can take for granted -- like how the gas tank door is opened or how to engage the cruise control, or how to adjust the seats even.

In terminal A don't miss the art work! You can't miss the amazing pile of luggage in luggage claim. But, the art above the check in counters is less obvious. Other pieces are on the parking garage. To reach the Thrifty counter you need to take a bus. It's opposite the terminal. There's a drop off zone, and a pick up zone. So, you need to wait in the pick up zone

This was the best deal I could have ever expected! Even the girl at the Budget counter said it was a killer deal. My daughter and I were searching for a week to find an affordable rental car for the week. Everywhere we tried was $500 to $600. When we got a car thru Holidaycars.com, our prayers were answered. We got a car for the week and it was only $250. It would have been even cheaper but we were dropping it off at a different location than where we picked it up. Thank you so much HolidayCars.com

Even after you have made your reservations check to see if your rates fall, might save you a little money. Check with your personal insurance to see if your insurance will cover the rental, mine does. Always take a photo of your rental as its a new car for you and if its white you will see plenty of other white cars in the parking lots, just easier to find. Dont leave anything visible in your rental, too many people out there who will try and help themselves to your property. Find out what the state laws are regarding the use of phones while driving, could save you alot of headaches. Check your care carefully for prior damage, most of the time the print out shows prior damage but for peace of mind check the car.

The airport has a single shuttle bus that goes to the rental cars. It can fill up fast. Main recommendation is be patient. I think the longest I waited was 15 minutes, even though it's frustrating to see a bus fill and leave without you. Also, Sacramento is a small airport. Don't count on a lot of amenities (ie food if you arrive after 9pm). Luckily at that time it's not crowded and you can get on your way quickly!

Travel tips: -Always stay organized and plan ahead so when you are on vacation everything runs much more smoothly and you can spend more time on playing and less on stressing to figure out your next travel plan. -If traveling internationally, always bring carry-on luggage and pack light. There have been times when luggage is delayed or temporary lost along the way and it seems worth it to pack light and keep it with you! -Bring snacks with you to the airport, you never know if your flight will be delayed or other issues arise., and no one likes a grumpy hangry traveler. -One to two adult beverages before flying on while on the flight can help with traveling jitters, but much more than that you can become a not-so-pleasant neighbor on the flight.

#1 Tip: Take the time to Google your car rental company's address to make sure it's located at the airport & not off-site. Trying to return a car to an off-site location in a city you don't know is stressful, especially if it's after dark or you're running late. Tip #2: if you're taking a red-eye or evening flight, pay for an extra day's car rental, so you're not stuck sitting at the airport when you could be doing something fun. Tip #3: Before leaving rental lot, take the time to familiarize yourself with the dash control panels. Not fun or safe trying to find how to turn on wipers or defroster when you're doing 70 on the freeway.

At Sacramento you no longer have to take a bus to a nearby town to get a rental car. They are all in a convenient location on the airport grounds accessed by a small bus right outside baggage claim. Staff was very friendly and helpful and the process was quick. Upon return to the airport check-in was fast and convenient. The car itself was very well maintained and clean. It even got good gas mileage. Do be aware that even with a pre-paid reservation there will be a small additional charge to take care of at the airport. Also be sure to check with your insurance company to see what coverage you have before making the decision to use the extra insurance from the rental company. All in all my trip to Sacramento was very pleasant. John McFarland

Sacramento is central to many destinations and tourist areas. We drove north to Shasta Lake about 150 miles north. While at Shasta Lake we could see Mt. Shasta too. How beautiful! We also went to some great eating spots in old redding and Mt. Shasta city. We curled around to highway 44 then picked up highway 99 and back through Chico CA. to visit friends. We stopped at Sierra Nevada Brewery and took the tour. We put about 450 miles on the car. I fly into Sacramento airport quite a bit and prefer this airport to others in the area because of its ease of use and location.
