Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

The Valley of the Sun, Phoenix is the perfect destination for adventure-getters, wildlife explorers, and sun worshippers. From cactus-lined deserts to rugged mountains, the vast Arizona landscape is just waiting to be discovered. But when you’ve soaked up all the rays there’s still plenty to do after the sun has set. The city of Phoenix comes alight with an energy that rivals Las Vegas after dark. Casinos, restaurants, art galleries and bars welcome you in with live music, stand up comedy, and a delicious food scene. And, when you’re ready to chill, there’s plenty of places to put your feet up, with hotel pools, luxury spas, or a hot air balloon ride over the stunning McDowell Mountain Regional Park.

3 miles east of downtown Phoenix, you will find Arizona’s largest and busiest airport; the Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. This modern travel hub is a great place to begin your adventure in the Grand Canyon State. There are plenty of amenities at the airport to keep you busy, with the usual shops, restaurants, and free Wi-Fi at your disposal. But head to Terminal 3 and you will find live music played by local artists, drop the kids in the play area whilst you go to FITPHX for a quick gym work out, or you can even explore the Phoenix Airport Museum, where you will find exhibitions, aviation history, and an art collection.

Car Rental at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

Once you’ve had your fill of everything there is to see and do at Phoenix Airport, you’re going to want to get out and start exploring. The best way to move through the region by far is by renting a car. Arizona is the sixth largest state in the US, with its capital, Phoenix, proudly standing as its largest city. So, to even begin discovering everything this incredible area has to offer without limitations it is highly recommended that you get your own wheels.

Because renting a car is such a popular option here, Phoenix Airport has its own Rental Car Center, with over 12 different high-end car rental companies to choose from. These include big names such as AVIS, Enterprise, National, Sixt, Hertz, and Budget. To get to the Rental Car Center there is a shuttle bus service available from the terminals that runs every 5-10 minutes. This is in place whilst Phase 2 of the PHX Sky Train is being implemented to extend to the center due to its popularity. Phase 2 should be completed in 2022.

Driving in Phoenix, Arizona

There truly is no better way to take in the fiery excitement of Phoenix and the immense beauty of Arizona than by getting behind the wheel. But before you do, make sure to brush up on the laws of the road first as there are many rules and regulations specific to this state that you may not have come across before. For example, unlike in other US states, no amount of alcohol is exempt from driving under the influence in Arizona. We recommend that you do your research before hand so that you are not only confident in the safety of yourself and others before turning on the engine, but also so that you don’t end up with any fines or tickets dampening your holiday.

Be prepared. Create pdf documents of all reservations, passports, identification, credit card info. Put these documents on your phone. Give yourself extra time at the airport to avoid lineups. Make sure you follow dangerous goods regulations and size/weight restrictions for baggage and carry-ons. This will reduce anxiety, especially if there are problems getting to the airport or you have issues clearing security and/or customs. Read a novel while you are waiting. Time will pass faster and you will have reduced anxiety.

All of the major car rental companies are in a building offsite from the airport. You must take a shuttle from the airport to the car rental location. When you return the vehicle, you take it back to the car rental building and then take a shuttle to the airport. Factor this in to your plans.

When arriving to the airport, we did not expect the car rental center to be in a separate area. There weren’t signs that made it clear that all rentals were in a different location. When we asked someone they informed us of the process. There were several busses ready to go when we walked out and did not have to wait which was very convenient. The ride took about 10 minutes. From there it was a pretty simple process to get in to our rental car. Upon return, the process to return the car and arrive to the airport was a cause of concern due to not known how long the process would take. When we arrived, the drop off was very simple and quick and when we walked up, there were already busses waiting, even at 4am. The busses we’re going to different terminals, luckily the driver asked us what airline we were taking and told us what bus to get on. The return process was very easy and quick which was a big relief and could even work if you were on a tight schedule. Overall, for the extra steps to get to and from the rental center, it is smooth and quick. The main thing that could be improved upon is more clear signage on how to get to the rental center and the busses listing what airlines are at the terminal they are headed to.

Sky Harbor is a nice airport and easy to transit. Definitely Eat the wings at Rosati's if you travel to Scottsdale, AZ. They're fantastic! And if you're an avid golfer, you have to give TPC Scottsdale a try. Its a beautiful course and anyone who has an affinity for golf will love golfing at this venue. We stayed at the Scottsdale Villa Mirage run by Diamond Resorts. Our room and amenities were great. This is a perfect place for large families. Get the 2 bedroom unit which can easily sleep eight people. There's so much to do just at the resort in the way of activities and events. Last but not least, when you travel to AZ, it's best to travel between Jan - Mar. After that, I think it just gets too hot to enjoy the outside! Happy and safe travels.

The shuttle from the airport to the car rental centre is great. Pick up your bags and walk out across the pedestrian crossing to the waiting buses. The drivers are generally very helpful with getting luggage on and off the shuttles quickly. Then you've just got to find your rental company at the rental centre. Again, there are very helpful staff around who can give you directions if you get lost. The only slow part is standing in line at your rental desk. If you're in a hurry, maybe choose a higher budget company that has more staff onboard. I wouldn't recommend Dollar Rental in this regard.

Don't forget to check the outside of the car for dents or scratches before leaving the garage. Even check the trunk for anything out of the ordinary. Find a spot outside of the garage to let a GPS synch up before getting on the highway. Keep an eye out for a gas station when leaving the airport so you can fill up there on your way to return the vehicle. Record your miles before leaving the garage in case there is any question when the vehicle is returned. Adjust your mirrors before leaving the garage.

Book your car well in advance with a reputable company. Make sure your insurance cover is right before you click on buy now. Visit Phoenix in the winter because the climate is mild. Keep your rental car nice and clean. Try to get the best mpg possible when driving Always buy petrol with cash because it's cheaper and easier. Check your tyre pressures weekly, and whenever you travel to a much colder or warmer part of the state...like travelling from Phoenix to Flagstaff for instance. Park your car in the shade of a tree in the summer in Arizona. Papago Park is really worth the visit (at least at this time of year when it is not boiling hot). Driving up to Sedona and then to Flagstaff was a great day out. Nice collection of different work of arts, particularly the air-inflated steel structures at terminal 3. Visit the Echo Canyon trail, a must-to in Phoenix if you are a hiker. It's about 400 meters elevation with some scrambling, but worth the views even when overcast. Visit the Dixie Moutains where there is an abundance of easy trails for hikers and mountain bikers. The view from the summit of the tallest hill in the park is worth the effort up the hill.

No problems on this particular return trip. Shuttle bus to terminal came quickly, driver was courteous. However, when I arrived in PHX the afternoon of Nov 5, I had a very long wait for a shuttle bus. Approximately 30 minutes from the time I got in line till the time the bus departed. I believe there was an accident near the rental center that no doubt caused a delay. TSA security line was short, although I had pre-check with practically no wait. I appreciated the free wifi at PHX. My home airport has it, but not all do.

Everyone at PHX that I interacted with were friendly and helpful. The facility is very clean and bright. Check in, dropping baggage off, and picking it up again were quick and painless. The bathrooms were well equipped with hooks to store your items while in use- a small but undeniable perk. Book everything ahead of time. Wherever possible, use sites like Google travel, Kayak, Trivago etc to find best rates on car rental and hotel rooms. When using a rental car, say you will bring it back with a full tank of fuel. Check glove box of rental car to ensure user manual present. When possible, stay in hotels that provide a free breakfast. This can save a family many dollars of travel expense. When visiting a national park, get the annual America the Beautiful annual pass. Even if you only visit one park on your vacation, chances are that you will visit another later on and this will save you money. If you have an American Express card, call them and speak to their car rental insurance department. Each time you rent a car, for 19.95 American Express will cover the collision insurance on the rental. This can save you a lot of money.

When renting a car, it's good to keep in mind that you do not HAVE to accept the car they give you. Usually I reserve an economy car but rarely is that what they give me. This is almost always fine, or even better than what I was looking for and I get a good price. However, if you are not comfortable driving a certain type or model, and it's not what you reserved, ask the associate to give you a different vehicle. For example, I rented an economy car and the associate gave me an "upgrade" to a full sized truck. When I saw it, I was not comfortable driving such a large vehicle in an unfamiliar city. I asked for it to be exchanged and the quickly obliged.

Buy the gas at the time of rental. It really save time when you drop the car off. They do charge for the full tank. Obviously if you bring the car with the tank 3/4 full and you paid for full tank, it sucks. Still saved time. I managed to return the car with no more than 1 gallon of gas in it.

This is a large busy airport with several terminals. I can only comment on terminal 4, but if you look for the signs, it is fairly easy to get to where you want to be. They have buses you board (after picking up your luggage) to get to the car rental building. Large information signs make it easy to get to baggage and car rentals and there are also information booths to help. Good "airport" food and snacks are a definite plus to enjoy if you have extra time.

I like to forego a purse as a carry-on & instead, use a small backpack with zipped pockets for wallet, lipstick, reading material, etc. I also use a small lunch bag to carry food for the trip. I carry a thermos/water bottle, which must be empty entering security, then I fill it at the water fountains once at the gates. I usually take a take-out container with breakfast (eggs & toast, for instance), then clean out & re-use the container during the trip for leftovers from meals where I can't eat all the food. A few zip-lock bags come in handy for that same purpose. I also take a new face mask from a local doctor's office or hospital to put on when the inevitable happens - someone with a bad cough signaling a cold sits next to or near me. And individual sanitized cloths for wiping hands after holding onto escalator rails, arm rests, etc are lightweight & easy to use.

Not exactly a complaint, but i wish the car rental center were a little closer to the airport. It's a fairly easy walk from baggage claim to the shuttle bus, and there's good signage inside the center. However, the buses to the center run frequently--or at least used to. When I turned in my car this week, the agent in the garage told me the shuttle runs only once every 20-25 minutes before 730 am. That was quite a surprise, and made me worry a bit because i still had to check luggage and go through security. But fortunately, the shuttle came within a few minutes, and I made it to the gate with some time to spare.

Construction, heavy traffic and weather conditions are just a few reasons why an expensive extra hour (or day) of car rental cost could be added to your actual rental costs. 5. Make sure you return the car FULLY gassed up with the correct type of gas. Its gracious, thoughtful, and appreciated by the car rental agency and their next customer. 6. If you have a portable GPS, don't forget to take it with you and save the cost of a rental. Also, it isnt that difficult to fill your gas tank on the way back to the airport so you won't need to have the gas prepaid at a higher rate. Do a thorough check of the car's condition before leaving the lot to make sure that you let them know if there are any dents or scratches that were on the vehicle before you took posession. 1. Allow for plenty of shuttle time to the airport. It is managed well, but it does take a few minutes. 2. The facility is very clean and orderly - take advantage of the "museum" in the rest room hallway! 3. Rush hour traffic is thick - don't underestimate. There are HOV-2 lanes available, which are thick as well but obviously advantageous. Off-rush hour traffic is also typically heavy - Phoenix is a growing city for sure! 4. Likewise, there was some light construction work taking place near the rental facility which caused slight road blockages. Not a great inconvenience, but be aware none the less. 5. Bring your own hands-free phone mount. Yes, you can connect to the vehicle (Apple Play in my case), but I experienced a delay in GPS directions by doing so - which does not work well in city areas where the blocks and stoplights come quickly! 6. Check your vehicle over carefully before leaving the facility (I found a "ding" not noted on the rental agreement) and have your agreement and driver's license handy for the exit booth. A few other points: *24-hour availability and staffing is extremely helpful. *I enjoyed choosing my vehicle from the appropriate row. That was a first for me. *Somehow, somewhere over the course of your stay, enjoy the sunrise and sunsets that only the desert can offer!

Sky Harbor is my home airport, so I travel through it quite a bit. Whenever you have questions, look for the Sky Harbor Ambassadors--they are volunteers who are there to help and are located throughout the airport. Terminal 4 is delightful. Note that it has currency exchange both before and after security. Matt's Big Breakfast (past security) is a Phoenix institution and has excellent food. All international arrivals are in Terminal 4. Passport control can be quite busy, but it is still much faster than, e.g., LAX or DFW. Terminal 3 is in the midst of renovations and looks to be as pleasant as Terminal 4 when finished. For now (January, 2019), it still requires a bit of navigating around renovation work. Terminal 2 (United) is the oldest and smallest, but is quite pleasant in its own bijou way. All rental cars are in a central car rental center. Buses travel to/from all terminals. Note that, in busy seasons, buses from the rental center to Terminal 4 can get very, very busy, sometimes requiring that you wait for two or three buses. If the lines for Terminal 4 buses are very long, take the next bus to Terminal 3 and take the free Sky Train from there to Terminal 4. It will be faster than waiting for the Terminal 4 bus.

Try to book early flights so you get a better car rental. When coming into the airport late, you do not get a good choice of your rental car in case they do not have the unit you ordered. The ground transportation from the airport to the car rental area is very good. You get onto a rental bus, and they shuttle you to the Auto Rental Area which is approximately 3/4 of a mile away. When you get off the bus, you walk into a semi round building and all the rental counters are located in this building. Then you go to your rental company, and stand in line waiting to sign up for your car. They send you downstairs, to pick up your vehicle. After loading all luggage into your car, you drive out the garage area, and the highway signs direct you to the appropriate freeway you may need. Really pretty smooth and no surprises along your exit out of the garage.

Make sure your passport does not expire within six months of your travel dates and know where it is located at all times to take advantage of last minute travel deals. choose a color theme, either black, brown or navy pants and/or skirts and choose tops, shoes and bags to go with that color. Avoid large suitcases because the temptation to fill those will make them too heavy to manage up and down stairs in hotels without elevators and around train stations. Leave lots of time to get to car rental area during winter months. There is a lot of snowbird traffic. Wear good walking shoes. You will be walking a long distance through terminal. Airport is great for waiting with friends before you go through security. Decent restaurants where you can sit and eat or have a drink before going through security. Terminal 4, i believe, using the SkyTrain

The airport and rental car counter were fine. My experience with Sixt was not very good. The agent was also fine, but it seemed that he was working on up selling to a more expensive car. I would make sure that the car that is reserved is exactly what you are looking for. I required a four door car which i thought was what i was getting from the picture on the reservation. I was told at the counter that there were no four door cars in that category. Rather than find another category four door car, i was told that there were no other options other than to pay an additional $95. for a utility vehicle. After waking up at 3 am and flying all day, i wasn't up for an argument so i ended up paying the extra $95. Not sure how that can be fixed other than not giving them my business in the future.

Travel Tips 1) keep it simple, don't take more than you need, if you think you might need it, you probably don't 2) if you have a lot of luggage and traveling with some one else, have them go get the rental and come back to airport to pick you and luggage up in stead of dealing with it on the rental bus 3) Eating, don't eat at the same restaurants you have where you live, you can always get that at home, try something different 4 Fuel, remember that if you pre-pay for the fuel, you are usually paying for a full tank, even if you did not use a full tank or return the vehicle with an empty tank 5) If your auto insurance covers your rental car, be sure you have "loss of use" on your policy. If something happens to your rental and it's your fault and that car is out of service from the rental fleet, you will still be charged daily for that vehicle.

Arrive in the afternoon for the best chance of a free upgrade with your car rental. If you have a smart phone, google maps is an awesome tool for finding your way around an unfamiliar city. When visiting the Phoenix area, visit Sedona. The 2.5hr drive to Sedona is well worth it. The scenic red rocks are breathtakingly beautiful. There are lots of trails to hike and great restaurants. Note that rental cars are at a separate location and require a shuttle bus to pick up and return to airport. Takes about 20 minutes either way so allow time for that. The airport is small/congested and rather busy. They do provide some travel info and brochures on Arizona but could use a manned information desk for arriving passengers. Not much there in the way of retail shopping. Passengers are often there early (or have flight delays) and have time to kill, so having more shops would be nice.

You will find several locations that are surprising and even stopping to look at the ground in the desert you will find lots of small interesting plants.
