Car rental Kahului Airport

If you’re lucky enough to visit the island of Maui, you’re in for a real treat. This Hawaiian Island is a true tropical paradise. If you want to explore all of its beauty, hiring a car at Kahului Airport is your way to go. The island offers public transportation but a rental car let you experience the island of Maui to the fullest.

Kahului Airport

Kahului Airport is located on the Hawaiian island Maui, three miles from the town of Kahului. It is the primary airport on Maui and it has a size of 1,391 acres. It is the second busiest airport in the State of Hawaii - after Honolulu airport - and the newest in terms of facilities. Kahului airport has two intersecting runways and it accepts both overseas flights and flights between the Hawaiian Islands. Air Canada, Hawaiian Airlines and United Airlines are a few of the airlines that operate through Kahului Airport.

Facilities at Kahului Airport

Kahului Airport offers several shopping and dining options to choose from, so you won’t have to be afraid of getting hungry or bored. The operation hours are based on flight schedules. There are three ATMs located on the airport, which can be found in the Ticket Lobby, Baggage Claim and Rotunda (Central second floor).

Rent a car at Kahului Airport

There are eight rental car companies located on Kahului Airport. You’ll find them in the car rental building which is located on the walkway past the end of the Baggage Claim area. There is a car rental shuttle which stops behind the car rental building. Rental car suppliers on Kahului Airport: Good to know: Dollar, Enterprise and Thrifty also have ADA accessible vehicle(s) available.

Explore Maui by car

Once you picked up your rental car at Kahului Airport, the exploring of Maui can start! The city of Kahului itself is not really a tourist destination but in less than 10 km from the airport you will find Ho’okipa Beach Park. A great spot for swimming, surfing and spotting sea turtles! There’s also plenty of parking available so you don’t have to worry about parking your rental car.

Besides Maui being a great destination for beaches and relaxing, it also offers some great scenic drives that can’t be missed on your bucket list. One of Maui’s best drives is the famous Road to Hana. Expect a twisting and narrow route while waterfalls, sea caves and roadside fruit stands often make their appearance. The drive doesn’t stop in Hana though, it actually wraps around the island. We recommend to plan a full day for this drive, as it offers a lot to see. Take your rental car on the Road to Hana or one of the other beautiful scenic drives Maui has to offer.

So this airport is easy to get out of and back into at the end of your trip. If you have the time, it's wise to pop into Costco and Walmart, which are both near the airport to buy food, alcohol, and even souvenirs as they are cheaper here then other parts of the island. Don't fall for the hucksters selling site seeing tours or whale watching tours on the streets, stick with a reputable company. Be prepared to be flexible with your plans as the weather can come in and change the whole day with a sudden rain fall. Or the wind can really ruin a potential boat trip or helicopter tour. If you have a red eye flight back to the mainland, and need to spend some tome once out of the hotel, we have enjoyed the botanical gardens and a drive upland to see the views. If this is your first trip to the islands, be prepared that EVERYTHING costs much more than what you pay on the mainland.

Maui is expensive, even for marginal food, so know this coming in. There is a Costco right next to the airport and is a good first stop to stock up on water, sunscreen, snacks, and full-on meals if staying in a suite. Maui is also very touristy, another shocker I know. Yet, there are levels and degrees of this fact. Some towns almost certainly look exactly like the same tourist traps in your neck of the woods and make you question the long flight out. Avoid many of the widely recommended spots to hit, and instead, be adventurous. We followed way too many recommendations to only be severely disappointed. This goes without saying, but protect yourself from the sun. Even on cold overcast days, the rays here are to be taken seriously. That tropical tan you were hoping to achieve will more than likely have you looking like a Main lobster than a tanned local. Be smart, and hydrate. Now if only I had listened to some of this advice....

Arriving at any airport in Hawaii is a pleasure - the tropical air just hugs you! To do's in Maui: Definitely check out Napili Bay beach. It's my favorite place to just bob in the water, and it's easy to grab a drink or meal at its northern end at Beach House restaurant. The Iao Valley is gorgeous and super easy to access. The road to Hana is, of course, a must do, unless you are prone to car sickness. I highly recommend starting before the sun comes up and hiking through the bamboo forest along the Pipiwai trail past Hana, which is amazing. Best restaurants include Sansei (everything is good), Leilani's (I've only had the crab and shrimp salad - amazing), Hula Grill (holy island fish, poke tacos and panko crusted ahi!), and Mala Ocean Tavern (hello seared ahi).

Definitely rent a car for Maui — the whole island is a pleasure to drive around and explore. ACE was a great rental car company — reasonably priced and accessible. For food I’d recommend Coconuts for fish tacos, Mama’s Fish House and Merriman’s for more upscale dining (definitely reservations needed for Mama’s), and Mill House for moderate prices but a GORGEOUS setting. For activities, snorkeling in Molokini, the Road to Hana, and O’o Farms (a tour with farm to table lunch) were all highlights. And of course sunrise at Haleakala was perfect — just be prepared to get there EARLY to beat the crowds, get advanced reservations (only $1 but you need them to get in), and BUNDLE UP. Lastly, we stayed in various parts of the island (Lahaina, Hana, and Paia). It was great to explore all parts of the island so I’d recommend that rather than staying in the same place the whole time.

I really enjoyed 3-D movie Whale experience at Maui’s Ocean Center Dome. It felt like actually swimming with whales. Looking directly into the eye of a humpback whale, was a life changing experience. Seeing the baby whale ride on it’s mother’s back moved me tremendously. It was so much easier to see whales here than from shore or a whale boat charter. Always guaranteed to have a sighting at Maui Ocean Center and no worries about weather or seasickness. I have seen many 3-d movies and this one is far superior technology. I feel the dome surrounds you completely and you really feel the experience of being in the ocean with the whales.

All rental prices in Hawaii have gone up 13% due to a new TAT tax on all rentals. This new tax may or may not be included in your rental quote, so be sure and ask. If you plan to stay a week or more consider a condo rather than a hotel room. They are both about the same price but the condos are much larger, private and you can make some of your own meals. Also, most condos have washer and dryers so you don't need to pack as many clothes. Most of the condos also include swimming equipment, beach chairs and towels as part of the package. There is a Walmart and Costco next to airport in Maui with much better prices than the local supermarkets. You can fill up on gas at the Costco before your flight home as it opens at 5:30 AM.

Make sure that you get shav ice. It was really good and we went there frequently. The children loved it. Rent a cooler for snacks to be taken to the beach or when you are traveling around the island. It works very well for traveling with children. We rented a mini van and took folding beach chairs wherever we traveled. We also wore our swim suits under our clothes so we could stop frequently at the beaches. The aquarium was great too because it was so informative about the sea life on Hawaii.

I went with husband to Maui for a short 5 day vacation. We researched how long we should stay and we decided that five days would be perfect to discover the island. I would suggest to go on the road to Hana using the gypsy app. The app is only $6.99 and goes over the whole route where to stop in the history of the areas. We think that this was the highlight for the trip. Stopping at black beaches, swimming in magical waterfalls, and walking through bamboo forests were some of the highlights of the road trip. Make sure to pack food and be aware that some area of the road don’t have cellphone reception. Spray yourself with bug spray before leavening to go on the road. Also be cautious when driving on bridges since they are all one way and need cation when crossing. Next tip would be to go on the Haleakala sunrise. Know that the road does get a little curvy so take cation and make sure to arrive in early so that you won’t need to rush to see the sunrise. Finally I would suggest to go to black rock beach to do snorkeling. Remember to pack your snorkeling set for the trip or just stop by the local Ross to pick up a reasonably priced set. You will see a ton of fish and if your lucky a turtle or too. Be careful for jelly fish, my husband and I got stung by a few. It wasn’t too painful, pain goes away within minutes. We also got some souvenirs from a family owned business next to McDonald’s in Kihei. They also have amazing fruit at the entrance. Hope you enjoy your trip to Maui!

The airport has a brand new (very nice and convenient) car rental terminal. Cross the street from baggage claim and ride a tram to the car rental counters. If you decide to walk to the counters after sitting on the plane for hours it's about a three minute easy walk. If you're a couple, when you return the car drop off the bags and one person at the curb in front of your airline and the other person can return the car and then you don't have to schlep the bags back to the terminal. When returning the car take the service road. It leads straight to the rental car return area. Be sure to run your bags through the Agriculture check before going to the ticket counter or they'll make you get out of line and do that first before you can check your bags.

If you can arrive at an odd time you will have less of a wait time for a car, of course. Also, check your plane that it's not one of the ones that was redone to put more passengers on because you have less leg room, skinnier seats, cannot put your seat back or even put your table try down and lay your head on it to sleep for an over night flight. If you have any kind of chronic pain it's totally miserable. If you are in Maui and are going whale watching go on the raft tours. They are so much more worth it.

The first stop is Costco to pick up food, snorkel gear, also beach chairs and towels if you are accommodations do not provide them. Maui is an easy island to get around, I would highly recommend visiting the numerous villages and towns along the coast and inland. Don’t forget to take in at least half of the Hana highway. An absolute must is to attend the Saturday swap meet that’s located about 10 minutes from the airport. There has to be 100 to 150 vendors every Saturday you can pick up some great deals.

We like the Kahului airport. It's small and easily managed despite the high tourist volume. Access roads are excellent. Once inside, there aren't a lot of options for food and drinks, but all we've tried are good, and reasonable. We've been pleased that flights arrive and leave on time. A new parking and car rental center opens this year which will help.

For example, if you want to take the road to Hana, you need a vehicle that can handle the elevation and something with a bit of power. Also, if you have a lot of luggage a larger vehicle will be easier to maneuver and transfer luggage.

If you plan to visit the volcano top for sunrise/sunset viewings, ask your hotel for some extra blankets the night before. Take them with you to the mountain top, as it may be 40 degrees up there at 10,000 ft altitude, and you probably won't have a heavy coat packed with you. Also, plan to visit Komodas Bakery after your visit to the top of the volcano, as it's probably on the way back to your hotel, anyway, in Makawao. The bakery is over 100 years old, has some of the most original, best-tasting doughnuts I've ever had!

Get off the plane ASAP & have one member of traveling party go get the rental car while others wait for luggage. When departing, drop off luggage & others in traveling party at airport check in & the return the car. Then take the rental car bus back to the departure gate. The airport was easy peasy to get through and around. Super relaxed... though, I'm sure not everyone would appreciate this appeal. Definitely check out all of the natural wonders that Maui has to offer. If you are a solo or easy going free-spirited traveler, might I suggest staying at the Banana Bungalow Hostel in Kahului. It's walking distance to some restaurants and the theatre, with daily group van tours as well as shuttle to and from the airport, which means you don't NEED a car. Though, I appreciated having a car in regards to freedom of being able to get away from the crowd when I wanted, and leaving early mornings to catch the sunrise and meditate at numerous beaches and secret spots on the island. Haleakala Volcano area, surfing in Lahaina, and the Sunday night drum circle at little beach were all memorable, to say the least. But, everything I did on this island was a blessed experience. If you're a spiritual being here having a human experience, you'll definitely find joy wading the Maui's healing waters snorkeling with turtles or trekking through the island's numerous bamboo forests. Best shave ice is a small franchise called Ululani's shave ice — Almond, Lilikoi were my personal favorite of the all natural flavors. So much to do... each day was adventure packed, and didn't do the same thing in the same place twice... Mahalo Maui, I will dream of you fondly.

Some low cost airlines charge for luggage and by the time you pay those fees might as well not take the low cost one. Maui was a fantastic island we loved Lahaina but after we bought all souvenirs we visited Paia and loved all the stores. Wished I didn't buy in Lahaina most of the stores carried the same stuff. Try and see as much as you can. We did a whale watch cruise, a dinner cruise which we are two friends and most every one were couples. I usually get the Hawaiian Scampi, but the Hot & Spicy is pretty good too. Most of the time, they're busy, so call your order in ahead of time if possible. I got the number from Yelp after checking out the reviews. If you're looking to pick from a wide variety of local and fusion flavor, then I'd suggest Da Kitchen also located in Kahului. The portions are big, so bring you're appetite or a couple of friends. Looking to explore the island a little? The view at the summit of Haleakala is amazing. On a clear day, you can see some of the other neighboring islands. The drive will take you about an hour to get to the summit, so give yourself some time to make the drive. The park recently started requiring reservations for the sunrise as there are only a few parking lots along the way which get filled fast. The sunset is just as nice, but can still get crowded fast. At the base of the mountain are a couple of lavender farms. Some also have a botanical garden that you can check out as well. There's also a number of beaches around the island that are good for swimming, surfing, or relaxing. If nature isn't your thing, there's a couple of large shopping centers. Queen Kaahumanu shopping center is located in Kahului. The Shops at Wailea located near the Wailea Blue Golf Course.

The roads are windy and narrow but the speed limit is also 10 to 15 miles per hour so it really isn't as bad as some people say. There are many places to stop on the way my favorite was Oheo Gulch and the sacred Seven Pools. There is a 4mile hike (round trip) that takes you through the jungle, across suspension bridge and through a bamboo forest to end up at a beautiful waterfall at the end of the trail. Big Beach is one of my favorite beaches that I would suggest going with a long sandy beach with crystal clear blue water (clearness of water depends on rain and wind direction) Eat Poke! 1) There aren't many places to stay in or near Hana. We chose Arabella Ark's B&B at Little Pig Crossing about 8 miles beyond Hana. Without question, it was the nicest place we stayed on Maui. She is a terrific host and has a wonderful guest house. She also has as a ceramics studio where one can buy superb pieces. She is so good that she even has several pieces in the Smithsonian. We highly recommend her B&B. 2) If you are fit and enjoy hiking, the hike into the Haleakala Crater is a must. The best way to do it is to park in the lot at the 8,000-foot level, hitch a ride to the top (easily done as there is a special pickup point for hikers), and then head down the trail, eventually arriving back at your car after about 9.5 miles of downhill and then a steep 2.5 mile climb back up the parking lot. It is an unforgettable hike. 3) If you want to go whale watching, an alternative way to do it is to take the ferry to Lanai. You will see many whales during the crossing, although you may not see them as close as boats dedicated to whale watching will get you. Take field glasses. You will also get to see a little of Lanai. A visit to Hulopo'e Beach is a must, as spinner dolphins can often be seen there. The beach is also one of the most beautiful in the country and an outstanding place to go snorkeling. You can also wander up to the Four Seasons Resort to have a look around. It's not exactly cheap at $1000 per night, but you can still enjoy iced tea and snacks there
