About Car Rental at Chicago Midway Airport

The Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW), popularly known as Midway, is an important commercial airport located on the city's southwest side, about 12 miles (19 kilometers) from the Loop. Midway International Airport was Chicago's main airport until O'Hare International Airport (ORD) opened in 1955. In 2019, Chicago Midway Airport handled more than 20 million passengers, making it the second busiest airport in the Chicago metropolitan area and the state of Illinois. Despite being just a little more than one square mile in size, the airport has five runways and a wealth of eating and shopping choices to keep even the most sophisticated visitor delighted.

However, if you've got your fill of the airport, there's much to see and do in the city. Many first-time and return visitors to Chicago choose to hire a vehicle at Midway airport for a stress-free experience. Luckily, there are many automobile rental firms right at the airport. All of Midway's rental firms are housed in one convenient location at the Rental Car Facility: 5150 West 55th Street. Lower Level Door #2 is where you will pick up your rental car. Shuttles run every 15 minutes and are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You have a choice of eight vehicle rental providers, including Alamo, Sixt, and National.

Galena, situated in northwestern Illinois, is a historic town with a number of 18th century buildings now serving as museums. The most famous of these converted buildings is the Ulysses S Grant House, once owned by the 18th President of the US. Built in the Italianate style, the house was in fact not constructed by Grant; in reality, it was gifted to him by the locals, who wanted to thank him for his role commanding troops in the Civil War.

Get to car rental 2 hours early, it takes awhile to get to the airport once car is returned, then it’s a hike to TSA. Many restaurants to choose from once inside.

Midway airport is usually not as crazy or busy as O’Hare and so I prefer it. My recommendation is to never rent a car from Budget/Avis at this location.

Give yourself time to secure your rental. Be patient at the counter and have your driver's license and any other paperwork needed ready. Take time to navigate the area around MDW. It is not the best area but you can get to the highway quickly. Make a note that many highways around Chicago are actually "tollways" and for some you need change. For others, a credit card will be fine. Some have tollbooth people to take the fee. And the roads around Chicago have a lot of potholes.

Travel tips: 1) have a home for all of your things and when you are done put it back in its home, to reduce the risk of losing items. 2) Take your time when traveling, it’s the times where I have 4 things in my hand, juggling a hot beverage and belongings are hanging out my bag when I lose things or travel mishaps occur. Take your time, put your things away, breathe and smile. 3) Get to the airport early. This builds off of the above. You can’t take your time as mentioned above if you don’t have time. You’ll have a much better experience traveling when you can meander versus sprint thru your travels. 4) Meditate and drown out the noise. As soon I board a plane, I put in earplugs or noise canceling headphones to drown out the mechanical noise and loud chatter on the flight. Now I’m focused on my comfort and can better sleep, read a book or work. 5) Have a game plan. After you arrive to your destination have your ground transportation organized and know where you are going. 6) Temper your expectations on perfect travel conditions. This way when you encounter hiccups in your game plan you will be agile enough to act and adjust your plans around it. Then, of course, pat yourself on the back. 7) Let your loved ones know you are safe and you love them. They will be delighted with your check in.

When traveling be prepared for the unexpected. Everyone is in a hurry, try to be understanding of their time as you would be for them to be of yours. We all have places to go and time is money and money is time. Pack what you need but organize so the things you need are accessible. We know kids cry but If you are not a parent please do not scorn, parenting can be hard, especially during travel and uncomfortable situations. Lastly, no one is promised tomorrow treat travel like it could be yours, or theirs(other peoples) last flight. Traveling should be FUN.

Use TripIt for organizing your traveling information. It's a single application for your phone. The app makes it incredibly easy to load information and then organizes your entire schedule, including booking sites and prices. It is the traveling app I use more than any other. I highly recommend it. I also recommend traveling with a charging cord for your phone that plugs into the USB in a car.

MDW is still trying to figure out the security line bag process. Over the last few years MDW has been one of the first to implement a conveyor belt/bin process but it still doesn't work well. They have too little space and too slow of process to move customers through at a reasonable and efficient pace. Best I can suggest is be patient because it's been this way for at least 2 years. They speed up the belt, slow down the belt, etc, etc but it's still not smooth.

Stay OFF I-355! Toll road, under construction, and if you don’t have I pass it is a pain to get over to the toll booths that take cash and have a human being to give you change, That applies to I-294 as well.

Plan your excursions ahead of time to ensure you have time to see and do all that you will want to do in Chicago. The Museum Campus downtown is fabulous, as is the Museum of Science and Industry on South Lake Shore Drive. The magnificent mile and the lakeshore are not to be missed!

Avoid rush hours for sure - traffic is a nightmare. Stay away from downtown for cheaper overnight car parking (can be nearly $50 per night downtown.) Lincoln Park, East Lakeview - all good areas with some nice boutique hotels and great walking. Can always take a train or bus downtown with minimal inconvenience.
