About Car Rental at Atlanta International Airport

The capital of Georgia, Atlanta is an artistic, historical, and lively city full of creativity and culture. It isn’t everywhere you can walk the streets of Martin Luther King’s birthplace before ending up at the Coca Cola HQ, and it is this celebration of Atlanta’s proud heritage coming together with its modern, urban innovation that makes it a truly unique destination. So, whether you’re learning about the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement in the History Centre’s Museum complex, or you’re chilling out at Little Five Points, the bohemian neighbourhood filled with markets, indie bookstores, and small live music venues, you can guarantee that Atlanta will ignite a spark inside you that will never go out.

The primary airport in Atlanta is the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (more commonly known as the Atlanta Airport). Named after former Atlanta mayors, William B. Hartsfield and Maynard Jackson, it is an international airport located 7 miles south of Atlanta’s central business district. Renting a car from the airport is an increasingly popular activity, and so the airport is home to the Hartsfield-Jackson Rental Car Centre, a specific centre that houses ten car rental agencies with room for more as it continues to grow. You can get to this centre directly via the SkyTrain, where you will find agencies such as Thrifty, Dollar, and Europcar.

Compare Car Rental at Atlanta Airport

If you plan on making the most of your trip to Atlanta, you should definitely look into renting a car, especially if you are on a budget. Although the public transport in Georgia is good, it limits where you can go, not to mention you are stuck with following the timetables laid out by the buses and trains. Renting a car means you can go by your own schedule and save on extreme public transport costs, especially for longer journeys.

When it comes to finding the right rental car deal for you this can seem like an overwhelming decision, but that is where we come in. Here at HolidayCars.com we aim to make your car rental process a quick, simple, and enjoyable one by using our extensive directory of car rental agencies to find deals that tick all the right boxes for you. And, by working with world-renowned brands like Sixt, National, Enterprise, and Hertz, all of whom provide shuttle or pick-up services from Atlanta airport, we can guarantee that, no matter what, you’ll be in the safest hands.

Driving in Atlanta

Driving in Atlanta can be particularly difficult due to the number of commuters getting around; however, it is worth renting a car for the independence it gives you. Once you’ve got the hang of driving in the right-hand lane and you’re comfortable on Atlanta’s busy freeways, you’ll soon find it is just like driving in any other city. So, stay vigilant, be patient, and you will have a great time exploring this incredible city by car.

Tips for driving in Atlanta:

Top Road Trips from Atlanta

Atlanta is the perfect place to base yourself if you want to get out and explore some of the Deep South of the United States. It is within close proximity to places such as Alabama and Tennessee, so there is plenty to discover once you step out of Atlanta’s boundaries.

We recommend spending a day visiting Charleston in South Carolina. 4 to 5 hours of picturesque driving will get you to this beautiful southern city with an abundance of history. Old streets date back to the 17th Century when it was founded, and these are perfect for exploring if you want to see incredible architecture, historic homes, and eye-opening museums.

Why Choose HolidayCars.com?

We pride ourselves on working with only the best car rental agencies in the business, and our quality makes sure to match that. With our carefully put-together comparison process, we can assure you that we will find the most affordable car rental deals for you based on your personal needs. Over a million customers before you have loved using us to book their rental cars, and we look forward to inviting more customers, such as yourself, to use our expansive site to help find a holiday car that is affordable and hassle-free.

ATL is a very large airport but has very good signage. If you follow the signs you cannot get lost. Pay attention to your belongings when you leave the security checkpoint. I lost my ipad because I set it down while putting my shoes on. I reported it as lost but it was never located unfortunately. Overall, great experience - very efficient airport. I am looking forward to my next visit.

I flew in from Europe, so I got to experience the new customs area. There was quite a bit of confusion regarding which line I had to use. The signs were clear, but the personnel was confused, so they sent me to the wrong place, and so I had to go back and use the machines. Then I had to walk all the way to the old customs area. I kid you not, it must have been at least a 10 min walk. The other thing that I thought was rather crazy is that the international terminal is not connected to the rental car center by SkyTrain (the domestic terminal is), so you need to take a shuttle and it takes a good 15 minutes to get there.

Trate de viajar con poco equipaje para facilitar la movilidad entre terminales. Trate de no tocar los pasamanos en las escaleras eléctricas. Follow signs to off site rental; no need to call as shuttle runs continuously. Try to be first in line if shuttle has a large group. Would recommend if you have flexibility and don't need to be in and out fast.

My daughter and I started off having a terrible experience, due to Delta employees. We were stuck sleeping in the airport on Wednesday, July 31st, due to pilot issues, coming in from Ft. Myers. Concourse A is a nice concourse, however I would suggest having a food place open 24 hours, as we didn't find out until 2am there was not a hotel to go to. Also, the concourses need more seats without arm rests - we ended up sleeping on the floor because of other cancelled flights, due to their weather issues.

I think they need more TSA staff. The pace is glacial. I would recommend taking Delta, as they have a hub in Atlanta. Previously when I took Southwest, I had a harder time. The car rental center was also confusing, because all the signs point you downstairs. However, that's where you pick up the cars, versus where you do the paperwork. Be prepared to spend 30-60 minutes getting out of the airport and rental car facility. It's busy, but the main reason it will take longer is the size of both compared to a smaller airport. You can walk on from the terminal to the SkyTrain as fast as the rail car will take you if you're willing to put some effort into your pacing. If you're headed north of the airport towards the Decatur, I'd recommend to places to stop and eat and have some one. Yeah! Burger is what you'd expect (burger, fries and all the works) but with a great local twist as they source all their ingredients from local farmers. Driving to the airport from the north end on Atlanta took longer than expected, but still had a great meal at Jekyll Island restaurant in terminal. I really enjoyed Stone Mountain Park. My traveling companion also highly recommended the Center for Civil and Human Rights Museum.

I've been to Atlanta many times, but this time, we went to the Delta Airlines Flight museum and it was really neat! It's easy to walk through and can be done pretty quickly. I would recommend, especially if you are looking for something to do before heading to the airport for your flight.

Atlanta is a great town for family and adult entertainment. The Georgia Aquarium, Coca Cola Museum, Civil Rights Museum, and College Football Hall of Fame are all in walking distance around the Centennial Olympic Park. The city has great restaurants, great professional sports, and excellent shopping opportunities. I would recommend Atlanta to anyone looking to get away to a southern destination with urban flair.

Very large and busy airport. Travel options are clearly marked, but a good amount of walking is involved. Elderly travelers should allow extra time in the airport. Secondly, arrive 2 hours early for a domestic flight as the TSA process was very busy.

Tons to do and see but mostly all customer service is less than helpful or next to none. Protocols and systems are all over the place and confusing (along with highway signage). TOO MUCH TRAFFIC...EVERYWHERE...ALL THE TIME.

Airport is very large, hectic and also extremely confusing. Administration should definitely take a foreign person and an older person there and see how they navigate and then make the necessary adjustments.

It's Atlanta airport - read the signs and don't panic. It is actually a very easy process to get from baggage claim to the rental car destinations. The only problem is how fast the cars drive down the street that you enter/exit and through the garage.
