Porto Airport

The airport first opened its gates in 1945 under the name Pedras Rubras Airport (meaning ‘red rocks’). In 1990 the airport was renamed after former prime minister Sá Carneiro, who died in an airplane crash in 1980.
Officially called Francisco Sá Carneiro airport, Porto airport (OPO) is located about 15 kilometers northwest from Porto's center. Porto airport has a single-terminal facility serviced by a number of main airlines covering domestic and international destinations. It is currently Portugal's third busiest airport in terms of aircraft operations and passenger numbers, right after Lissabon Portela Airport and Faro Airport. The usual check-in time for flights across European countries is 60 minutes. For domestic flights it is only 30 minutes. Porto airport is the base for TAP Portugal, the major Portugal's national airline, and is also served by Air Berlin, EasyJet, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Transavia.

Don't understand why it is rated so low in world rating. Seemed to be kind and attentive personnel. Reasonable prices in shops and food court. Short queues, but few places to sit. Recommend to avoid to stay there for night. As for meals, I can advise DOURO cafe there

If traveling in off season, definitely check out the car rentals. They are most definitely affordable. If you want some data at a reasonable cost check out Vodafone, they offer a sim card for 10 euro. This gives you 3G of data and 200-500 local minutes.

Renting a car in advance is always the best option. If you have children, make sure it is not cheaper to buy a child safety seat than to rent it. Photograph the car immediately after inspecting it and always take out insurance. In case of any accident, don’t hesitate to inform the rental company and take pictures of the damaged part of the vehicle. These tips help make your experience even better.

Porto is a lovely city with endless parts to explore. The airport like any city is situated further outside the city, but a $20 cab ride gets you into the more touristy area. You will always be walking up a hill which is great because it justifies all the delicious food and port wine you get to have! Tour a port distillery, take the funicular, ride a boat. The city is gorgeous and the people demonstrated the most hospitality I have ever experienced traveling in Europe. Excellent food, picturesque scenery everywhere you look. Loved it.

Definitely activate the toll device, the convenience was very nice and not expensive. GPS is the great for navigating in town, but for planning and orientation you can’t beat an old fashioned paper map. Phone signals come and go in rural areas, as well as cities with buildings blocking the signal-an actual GPS like a Garmin doesn’t rely on phone signals and is more reliable.

Some tips: there are lots of places to get food at the airport with plenty of options before and after security. The whole airport has WiFi, so that’s also great. The car rental companies are a 10-min walk from the airport (if they don’t have the transfer bus), which is something to note in advance. Likewise, some companies like Surprice and Europcar need you to check in at their desk offsite and not in the rental car area in the airport. Outside of the airport, there is A LOT to do in Porto! Check out the free walking tours, for example! There’s a rooftop bar at Porto Cruz if you want a beautiful sunset view and some great seafood places on that side of the river. Or have some fabulous food at Jimao’s Wine and Tapas Bar. Porto is a great city with lots to see, eat and drink, so spoil yourself and explore!

Porto airport is perfectly sized and easy to get in and out of. The light rail line allows one to get to the city quickly and inexpensively. There is sufficient bus lines to take travellers to most other nearby towns just outside the terminal that run frequently too. There is a fair amount of food places and shops outside by the ticket/checkin area but past security by the gates many more options exist with greater variety of offerings. All in all a great small airport.

I would definitely recommend leaving your luggage at the airport, if you go to Customer services at the airport you can leave your suitcases really cheaply for the day. Then get the Metro(under 5 euros round trip) down to Porto centre, you can get off at Trindade and wander round the centre of town, lots of history and great places to eat, and of course lots of lovely shops

Make sure you know where to walk to If car hire desk is off site. You will not need a car during your time in the city of Oporto. On your way out of the city check fuel prices so you know what’s a reasonable amount to pay. Beware the SatNav that takes you up narrowing roads - Find an alternative route. Make sure you check out the toll road situation - Via Verde is a real time saver. Keep to the speed limits.

I definitely recommend to everyone the route along the Douro River to Pinhao. Also visit any of the many wineries along this way. Who likes nature can visit the Alvao National Park (Vila Real). Who likes countryside can visit the small but beautiful village Montesinho (National Park Montesinho). Don't forget to take a dip on some of the many river beaches (praia fluviale), the water is clean everywhere. Portuguese in the countryside are friendly and happy to help you if any problem occurs, but older people have a problem with English.

Best travel tips from My experience to other people would be to be organized with your bookings of hotels and car rental. Don’t over pack. Shopping in Europe is great and if you don’t have something it’s an easy find. Pre plan your days of sight seeing so you don’t get frustrated. Just take your time no need to rush your on vacation. It’s to be enjoyed and taken in with great pleasure.

Fill-up: If you rented a car at Porto airport and you need to return it with a full tank, there's a Jumbo station just outside of the airport that's cheaper than most stations in town, takes cards (which the cheapest stations often don't), and doesn't require pre-payment (so you don't have to guess how much fuel you need). Tolls: Rhodium (at Porto airport) provides an automatic toll-paying transponder in the car, which enables you to use the "só aderentes" lanes at toll plazas. This saves SO MUCH time and hassle. Transmission: My better half usually insists that I rent an automatic so she can take turns driving, but the price differential was HUGE so I got a manual. Two years ago in Spain, I had no problem renting an automatic, so this is apparently a Portugal-specific thing. Fun fact: I actually tried to rent a manual (for practice) in Los Angeles before we left, and it's virtually impossible.

The surroundings of Porto have lots to offer, try to avoid the city center with the car. You can park in the amazing art deco parking garage in Rua Passo Manuel and walk from there. There are lots of places to visit outside of Porto. I would recommend driving up north. Head to Foz and have a coffee at Praia Da Luz and a short walk at the beach. Then head over to Matosinhos and have rent a surfboard and book some private lesson with Surfaventura - age doesn't matter, it will always be fun. After the water action head to Casa Serao, Porto best-kept secret for fish. Drive up north and visit the Alvão Natural Park. We always try to have at least one dinner at Esquina do Avesso in Leca. (The opened a second place next door). If you go south, visit Aveiro and the salt lakes.
