Ponto Delgata airport easy to get around in, not terribly large. The 2rent signage at the rental location in the airport is a little tricky as it's part of the Hertz signage.

remind people to go to the desk at the airport not go directly to the rental location outside the airport doors. Also, have people understand before hand that they will be required to have a 300 euro deposit even though they already purchased full insurance. I waited in line for almost 30 minutes because a customer was so upset about this

Ponta Delgada’s Airport is a very easy airport compared to U.S. travel. The food in the airport is great so my first advise is to make it your first food experience in Ponta Delgada! We were directed to into the main lobby where all the rental cars and travel companies have booths for customer service which was simple to find our rental car company. We advise going through holidaycars.com but using the Sixt rental car company. They were great and we got a brand new suv for the trip for such a reasonable price! On the way back you can go all the way to the right for checkin there is really only one area which makes it very simple. Waiting area gets busy after check in so be on time for passport check and entry to the gate on the other side of the glass. Enjoy your trip! We did!

Travel tips...to Sao Miguel island (Portugal), starting with the city of Ponta Delgada (PDL)… When parking your car, always look for "YELLOW" lines, you are not permitted to park in there otherwise you will get a fine or will be towed away. Also, when parking your car in area with park meters, always leave your proof of payment on the dash of your car so it can be visible to the parking attendants. When using a parking meter in PDL and that you paid more time that you really needed, keep your proof ticket and you can use the remaining time in an other parking spot where the meters are used until the expiry time on the ticket. If you paid too much time in the meter and the money extends your time beyond 20h00 (8:00PM which is the time at which the parking becomes free but restarts the next morning at 8:00AM) you can continue to use that ticket for the remaining time the next morning. There are many roundabouts as well as pedestrian crossings in PDL… Be sure to lookout for pedestrians wanting to cross because they ALWAYS have priority and they do not always check for oncoming cars… For roundabouts, if you are not the first one in, you do not have priority and must let the other cars go by before you can get in. if you are getting out at the 1st exit, stay right with your flasher to indicate your intention and wait until you can merge-in. If you are getting out at the 2nd or later exit, use the left lane to merge-in and always use your flashers to indicate your intentions.

If you are heading to the Azores for the first time, I highly recommend renting a car so you can see all of the island. Having a car allows you to explore all of the varied landscapes, locations, and restaurants the island has to offer.

Spend time and drive the whole island! It is the most beautiful place I have ever seen, the flora and fauna is just out of this world. With the island only 33 miles long and 11 miles wide it is easy to see it all. The food in some of these small towns are awesome! The rental car from Wayzor was a great Volkswagen that made it easy to get around and easy on the gas! You get to see old rock walls that separate the land from each owner, Holestein milking cows, corn grown, tea and pineapple plantations, beautiful Japanese cedar trees and hydrangeas that lined the side of the roads!

Car rental is a must when in Sao Miguel! Make sure you visit Ponta da Madrugada - head there early to catch the sunrise. The Caldeiras in Furnas are a must visit as well. Our favorite hotel stays were Pedras do Mar Resort & Spa and the Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico in Ponte Delgada

Quick response to our vehicle which had a slow leak. Staff came to our home, investigated and determined that a nail was stuck in the tire, They provided us with another vehicle on the spot, actually an upgrade for the same price. Great customer service, friendly, efficient and a great team of people. We fully recommend this company and will rent from them every time we return to the beautiful Azores.

Small airport and quite close to town. A cab ride is about 10 euros into Ponta Delgada. People are friendly and most know English well.
