Auckland is a city in the North Island of New Zealand. It is the largest urban area in the country and is located in the Auckland Region which includes outlying rural areas and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf. A diverse and multicultural city. Auckland is important because of the arts, and education. So drive to the University of Auckland, the largest university in New Zealand. Don’t forget landmarks such as the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, the Harbour Bridge, the Sky Tower, and many museums, parks, restaurants, and theatres. They are among the city's significant tourist attractions. Despite being one of the most expensive cities in the world, Auckland is ranked third on the 2016 Mercer Quality of Living Survey, making it one of the most liveable cities.

Climate in Auckland

Some say Auckland has an oceanic climate, while others say the climate is subtropical with warm humid summers and mild damp winters. Either way, Auckland is the warmest and sunniest main center of New Zealand. Snowfall is extremely rare so you can leave your winter coat at home. Get up early and enjoy the beauty of the early morning. At that time, generally, a solemn stillness holds, and a perfect calm prevails.

Use the E lines to get thru customs if you are an international traveler. It was a smooth, quick and easy process. Make sure you fill out your declaration card fully, honestly and in pen. If you are unsure of a declaration, err on the side of conservative. Better safe than sorry

We rented a car from the Auckland airport to Taupo which we dropped the car off at and flew out to the South Island. I would highly recommend downloading maps on your phone and pinning points of interest that you may want to go. It made it very easy to find all the places and figure out how far in distance things were from where we currently were. Also, if you are doing major touristy hikes or attractions best is to get there early in the morning. We found it to be a lot less crowded. AND don’t be afraid to be a little spontaneous. Sometimes it works out for the best.

Spend some time in the smaller towns relaxing on beaches. Driving isn’t as hard as you might think on the left side. Pay any toll road fee before you get rid of your car. On a related note what was our license plate number. We need it to pay the toll.

AKL is small but has big airport amenities. Baggage transfer is quick and retrieval is easy. Shuttle buses run frequently, and free phone service is available - ask at the information desk. Moreover, buses to city center are easy to find. They run every 10-15 minutes and take about 45 minutes to get downtown. They cost about $17.00 NZD one-way for adults. Buy a round trip ticket to avoid having to buy the return ticket downtown.

Auckland Airport was rather comfortable, with much of facilities ranging from souvenir and cuisine choices. However, I feel like resting spaces could be expanded so that overnight travelers could have more places to go to and enjoyed a better time when traveling to New Zealand.

Book rental car well in advance. Have all documentation at hand on arrival. If not English language drivers licence get an international one. This averts any issues at rental desk. Make sure your credit card in in date and valid, including a good credit limit in case an excess has to be applied. Weigh luggage before leaving home...avoid extra charges and respect size limits for hand luggage...it could avoid embarrassment at the gate!! Bon voyage

?? Common sense is number 1. Arrive to drop of 30 min early Incase of Que, Know where you are going before driving , Park in safe area and if at shopping try to park at a end park so only 1 side exposed to shopping rash. Keep fuel tank over half full if taking a back road as maybe no fuel stations open if late , Lock car and leave windows down just 10mm to prevent excessive heat build up in car while parked in sun

A very nice airport. Very modern and with all the normal refinements. Security was pleasant and simple. Note that you cannot bring more than 50 cigarettes into Auckland, and they WILL find them as they xray ALL your bags post customs. So do yourself a favour and don't bring them in the first place. Give up instead!

Traveling New Zealands North island, check out the city of Auckland, the North with beautiful Pahia and Cape Reinga. After that come down south again to explore Hamilton and don't forget Rotorua. There you need to do the tree walk and swim in a natural hot spring river. It has about 40 degrees Celsius. From there drive up to coromandel and enjoy the great forest park. If you have time left go to hot water beach and dig yourself a nice hot bath at the beach. Be aware of the tide times though. Go back to Auckland and finish your journey once more with the lively city.

International and domestic are separate terminals. Shuttle bus between the two. Or just walk along the painted green line. KFC and McDonalds are there, but eat at Hanaka. Security doesn't allow bottled water. Plenty of outdoor smoking areas.

When entering New Zealand always be honest about what you are bringing in. The customs people are incredibly friendly and helpful and can help dispose of items you shouldn't have, declare it all! When driving on New Zealand Roads do some research before leaving by reviewing the road code. This will help you to get ready for the adventure ahead. If you are not familiar with driving on the left side of the road, make sure you are well rested before attempting to do so. Maybe stay at a hotel the first night to get a good night sleep. This will help increase your focus on where you need to be when you driving. When driving you may want to remove as many distractions as possible such as screaming passengers, music and other items that will take your attention off the road.

Rotorua is a must to visit with the geothermal areas, which are fascinating. The Coromandel is also worth a visit, with some great scenery. If you get a chance, visit places off the beaten track as there are hidden gems in New Zealand. There are plenty of smaller places to visit on the journeys to the more obvious tourist attractions. Hobbiton and the Weta Studios tour in Wellington are also great places to visit, even if you are not that interested in Lord of the Rings. Huka Falls is awe inspiring. Jet boating there is brilliant.

Aukland airport car rentals come in a wide price range. If you're willing to take a free short shuttle ride from the airport you can save quite a bit of money on your car rental. Blue Sky Car Rentals is one of the lower priced car rentals available, due to being a short ride away from the airport. They have a decent car park with many hybrid cars and bigger cars if you need more space. The cars are a bit older than the big expensive rental car companies at the airport, but the price reflects that. And I like that they do not look like your typical rental car, which makes them less obvious targets for criminals. We had a great time traveling around the North Island and and the car took us everywhere without any troubles. Next time we might go for a Hybrid car to save a bit on gas money.

Re-check your booking for mistakes. If going to tour don't stay in Christchurch - drive a short distance along your tour route and stay there. Plan your overnight stops and book in advance. Try to space out the distances travelled each day. Keep an eye on fuel levels in the tank.

I arrived from an international flight and found that the security and customs check flowed smoothly and quickly. I was impressed with the speed of luggage availability. There was a very cool and interesting entryway that introduced the country, it's roots, etc. visually and with background music. Information centers were visible, easily accessed, and staffed by knowledgeable people. There are many places to get refreshments. There are several companies readily available to help you with phone services and SIM cards. There are plenty of ATMs and currency exchange centers.
