Nuevo León's capital, Monterrey, is one of Mexico's richest and most industrialized cities. Although Monterrey is an ultramodern metropolis, its narrow alleyways, flat-roofed buildings, and charming patios have managed to keep some of its typical Spanish ambiance, notably in the city's ancient sector, the Barrio Antiguo, which is undergoing something of a revival. There are several magnificent museums and galleries, as well as public squares and parks that have hosted a number of notable events and festivals since the 16th century when the city was first established. It is located in the Santa Catarina Valley, which is a great place to visit if you want to view some of Mexico's northern deserts and mountains.
Monterrey's international airport, officially known as General Mariano Escobedo International Airport (MTY), is situated near Apodaca, Nuevo León, Mexico. The airport, together with Del Norte International Airport, handles domestic and international flights for the city of Monterrey and its surrounding region. For Aeroméxico, Magnicharters, and VivaAerobs, and Volaris, the airport is an important hub. Every day, there are more than 300 flights to 35 locations in Mexico, the United States, and Latin America. Monterrey International Airport is Mexico's 5th busiest airport and Latin America's 12th busiest airport, with the 2nd-highest volume of passengers in northern Mexico. It served approximately 8.2 million passengers in 2021, with the busiest flight routes being to Mexico City and Houston.
Car rental providers are conveniently placed near the baggage claim area on the first floor of the terminal building. Car rental providers at Monterrey Airport include Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Europcar, Firefly, Hertz, Mex Rent a Car, National, Payless, Sixt, and Thrifty.
If you didn't get a rental car at the airport, don't worry. Several pick-up locations are available in the downtown area. Renting a vehicle in the city center of Monterrey rather than the airport gives you more flexibility as you’ll be able to shop around before choosing one. The only downside is that, during peak tourist season, most of the vehicles may already be reserved so we recommend pre-booking online to secure the car of your choice. There are many rental car agencies in the city center, including Europcar, Thrifty, and Enterprise, just to name a few. Make sure to compare prices and pick-up locations to get the best deal on car rental in Monterrey.
Before driving in Mexico for the first time, you should get acquainted with all of the road's laws and regulations. Even If you travel often, it's a good idea to review the most important traffic regulations in order to keep yourself and your passengers safe.

Monterrey is a great starting point for a road excursion via the San Isidro canyon on the Nuevo Leon 20. As one of Mexico's most picturesque drives, it is located in the national park of the Cumbres de Monterrey, in which the route is completely paved. Pass San José de las Boquillas, which rises to a height of 2,200 meters above sea level, is known for its small-town atmosphere. The San Isidro Canyon may be seen from here.
The San Isidro Canyon segment of the route is the most beautiful. The canyon cuts through gigantic mountains which rise up around 800m on either side. It’s quite a sight to see. Pictures don't do justice to the enormity of it. For those looking for a scenic drive through tropical rainforest, the Puerto Genovevo mountain route is a must.
Within Cumbres de Monterrey, you can also visit the canyons of Matacanes, el Salto, and Laberinto for rock climbing and rappelling. Cola de Caballo (Horse Tail) waterfall is awe-inspiring, while La Boca dam's calm waters are ideal for sailing. It's a wonderful network of caves within a mountain, accessible via cable car. Alternatively, Bustamante is another great place to see interesting caverns.
