Double check everything, twice! Avoid B Rental. Be suspicious when a booking takes 3 days to be confirmed. Don't punch the nasty rental people, it's just not worth it. Use slightly more expensive and more reputable companies. Don't expect to win the competition for free rental after commenting on a bad experience like this.

Drop off your passengers first. Then return your rental vehicle. Don’t be afraid to double park— everyone seems to... be careful backing out of spots. Drivers don’t stop!

Make sure you have a GPS to navigate from airport. Also there is a Petrol station just 2 minutes from airport on the airport on the right hand side. Be careful when driving in Italy as cars and motorbikes takes over on both sides and sometimes they drive through the emergency lane.

Linate is the best location to rent from if you're taking a trip in north or north east italy. Its a smaller airport so easy to get in and out of without too much confusion. Theres also a petrol station next to the car drop-off area so no hunting for one required!

When renting a satnav check both the language and importantly the units in which the speed limits are displayed, before leaving the rental parking bay. Take a small torch with you to check for existing scratches and damage match the record sheet as the parking bay area is poorly lit. Set a route on your satnav to avoid the area around Monza when the Italian GP has just finished. Make a note of the location of the nearest gas station on the return side of the road when leaving the airport. On the 1st day schools return after summer hols be especially vigilant of speed limits near schools. We observed several police radar traps on school approach roads. Make sure you know where the controls for the lights etc. are before it gets dark, while you are driving.

We always plan for delays and try not to get upset when things inevitably go wrong. Patience is extremely important when traveling! About a week or so before each trip, I make a mental list of items I don’t want to forget — which I WILL forget if I don’t write them down. I’ve learned that when I think of something, I need to write it down. A simple “Please,” “Thank you,” and “I’m sorry” in the local language goes a long way. I also like to learn the word for beer, but that’s just me. Stay Hydrated on Planes I know it’s fun to get drunk at 30,000 feet, but it’s also much easier to get dehydrated. Staying hydrated — especially on long-haul flights — makes it easier to get over jet lag too. Put your room number & hotel address in your phone. Don’t keep all of your cash and cards in one spot. I usually hide some cash and a back up credit/bank card in a separate bag — not the same bag as my wallet.

We stay on Lake Iseo which is a little drive away so can't comment on Milan specifically. Although Italy is one of my favorite destinations and I'd certainly recommend a visit to anyone.
