Kos is one of the smallest islands that make up Greece, with only 44 km by 11 km of land, and a population of approximately 30 thousand people. There are many activities to do and places to visit, and without a doubt, it is the ideal place for people who want to enjoy Greece and the Aegean Sea in a calmer environment.
Its small size makes it ideal to travel by car, and you can rent a car as soon as you get off the plane. Kos International Airport offers a comprehensive car rental service, where world-renowned agencies such as Sixt, Hertz, AVIS and Budget can be found. Here, you can rent a small car if it is a trip as a couple or larger cars for families and groups.
If you are wanting to rent a car, but save a little bit of money, we recommend renting a car outside of the airport, since the prices are typically much cheaper. However, either way we recommend booking in advance, as much as you can, as this will keep the cost down dramatically.
The variety of the cars is quite similar to what you will find at the airport, but you may find yourself with fewer payment options, especially if you haven’t prebooked. While at the airport they accept a large number of credit cards and practically all kinds of currencies, it is most likely that local agencies only accept Euros.
Despite this, all agencies are used to receiving tourists, as tourism is a big part of life in Kos, so they are likely to be as helpful as possible.
The most basic driving rule all of Greece is that you drive on the right. Along with this, when you are on the three-lane highways, overtake in the middle lane and, at intersections, vehicles coming from the right are the ones who have priority.
Most gas stations are open from 7 am to 7 pm, so be sure to fill up on gas during those hours, otherwise you risk running out of gas and being stranded in the middle of nowhere.
Other helpful driving tips:
Car rental agencies generally give you proof that you are the one who rented the car, be sure to take it with you in the car to avoid running into any problems.
It is likely that if you are stopped by a police officer or member of the security forces, they will ask you for some type of identification, so take your passport or ID with you when driving.
Besides the mentioned international car rental companies, you can find other local ones that have a pretty good rating, along with some great deals. One of them is Bros Rent a Car, located on Tigaki main road. Along with finding you a great deal on your rental car, they will also advise you what to see on the island, where to eat – and we all know that there is no better travel advice than that of a local.
Another acclaimed agency in the area is Kosmos Rent a Car. Although it is a bit more expensive than others, they offer a wider variety of cars and comprehensive insurance that will protect you in any situation. They deliver the car to you freshly washed, clean and, most importantly, ready to drive.
No matter where you go in Kos, there will be something to see and do – especially if you’re into history. The island has had numerous settlements since the Bronze Age and history lovers especially will appreciate the views and artifacts here. In the middle of the city, you will find the monument called the Tree of Hippocrates, since it is believed that he was born in the city. Along with this, you can go to the Hippocratic Museum that was created in his honor. If you go to the outskirts, you will find several ruins of what were known to be fortresses and settlements that are hundreds of years old – for these, it is essential you have your own mode of transport.
