About Car Rental at Chania Airport

Chania is the second largest city of Crete and is one of the most popular vocational tour destinations in the whole country. The city is located by the Mediterranean coast, in the northwest of the island and is home to several historic locations.

We recommend making your stay in Chania more stress-free by hiring a rental car from Chania Airport. Chania Airport is also known as ‘Daskalogiannis’ and is located nine miles away from Chania, which is a twenty-minute car drive to the City Centre.

Though transportation from the airport to Chania and vice versa is handled by bus service and local taxis, car rental is still the best option to travel in and around the city. Car rental desks can be found in the arrival hall of the airport, with passengers who opt for renting a car from Chania Airport are asked to provide ID/passport, rental voucher, valid driving license, and driver's credit card for the security deposit. The most popular car rental companies are available at the airport, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Goldcar, Hertz, Surprise and, thrifty.

If you are wanting to pick your car up from outside of the airport, there are plenty of collection points to pick your car up from. A small airport but with fairly good facilities. There's a small bar/cafe landside and a moderate selection of shops and catering airside. Unlike at many airports nowadays there was no tap to fill water bottles. You still have to buy drinking water in PLASTIC BOTTLES at this airport! The "special needs" assistance staff were good. They were helpful and cheerful.

Chania is a Great regional airport with good clean modern facilities. Whilst driving in Crete remember to keep as far right as is safe to allow other quicker vehicles to overtake you safely. The locals are very friendly and will happily to talk to you if you engage with them. Most restaurants are open very late in summer so don’t worry if you’re not ready for dinner until late in the evening. You can get great tasting food at even the smallest unassuming taverna so don’t be afraid to explore all little villages, lanes, etc.

Ensure you know what the hidden charges are ! The advertised prices and bookings are excellent value for money BUT you won’t leave the forecourt without paying high insurance and protection deposit wavers Diesel cars cost a supplement The staff are very helpful and pick up and to the airport is quick All cars are very new and in excellent condition If you have a non EU licence make sure you take necessary documentation The garage is very near the airport I came to Gold because I was disappointed with a higher cost rental from Europcar which was old and with 50,000 km on the clock and the poor service I experienced there I didn’t regret forfeiting the 150e for the europcar and will be returning to gold on Chania next time

Well, that really depends what type of traveller you are. Creta offers a bit for almost everybody. I was mainly on north-western side, so these are the suggestions: Beaches: Elafonisi and Balos (you would feel almost like in caribic). Also Falasarny is perfest. Very wide, sandy, with very good entry for kids. Hiking: Samaria is a must. If you are recreational walker, take organised trip. If you are a real one, make it down and up again on your feet. This is what we have done. History: A lot to see, not only Knossos (Jul/Aug do it during a cloudy day). I will not mention other places. Do areaserch so that you will find out, what is Creta about. Nice trip
