About Berlin Tegel Airport

Berlin Tegel Airport, or officially Berlin Tegel "Otto Lilienthal" Airport, has a military background that goes way back to 1823. In the early years the property which later became the airport was used by the military as an artillery firing range. During the First World War it was used to train aerial reconnaissance crews. Some time after the war it was used as a rocket testing ground and during the Second World War it became a training ground again, this time for the Air Force until it was bombed and destroyed by Allied forces. After three years the airfield became the centre of focus when it was reconstructed by French occupied forces in order for it to assist in the Berlin Airlift. Commercial aviation at Berlin Tegel Airport started in the early 1960's although there were several restrictions as to which airlines were allowed in West Berlin's airspace.
Today Berlin Tegel Airport is the fourth busiest in Germany with about 22 million passengers passing through in 2018.
The airport has almost every facility you would expect from an International airport such as a wide variety of restaurants and shops, lounges and much more. On the roof visitors can enjoy the sight of arriving and departing aircraft and other airport operations.
