About Car Rental at Paphos Airport

The country’s second largest airport, Paphos International Airport is incredibly popular. It provides great access to not only Paphos but many favoured resorts such as Coral Bay and Limassol too.

Cyprus, not to mention Paphos itself, is relatively small, but public transport still isn’t the most efficient way of getting around. Instead, you will find that renting a car will not only give you the ability to do and see much more of the area, but it will also be overall much more cost-effective too. This means that car hire from the airport is a popular choice with passengers, and as such there are plenty of agencies you can use that are situated at the airport.

Downtown Car Rental in Paphos

Renting a car at the airport may not be the right choice for you however. The airport is only a 20–25-minute drive away from the centre of Paphos, and there are plenty of public transport options that can get you there. Once in the city, there will be plenty more car rental options to choose from, with more companies, different deals, and of course no dreaded airport tax to pay.

If you want to avoid using a big brand name like Budget or Europcar, then why not try Green Motion? They offer a wide range of low CO2 vehicles, so you can find something that suits your needs whilst knowing that you’re doing your bit for the environment too.

Driving in Paphos

When exploring another country by car, you will want to make sure you are familiar with their legal requirements before getting behind the wheel. Paphos is no different, and whilst Cyprus in general is a beautiful country to drive in, you will want to make sure that you are driving as safely as possible for the benefit of yourself, your passengers, and the people around you.

These are some things you should know about driving in Paphos:

Car Rental Agencies in Paphos

We know that you’re going to want to get going as soon as you get off the plane, and luckily that won’t be a problem. There are plenty of car rental agencies in Paphos both at the airport and in Paphos Downtown for you to choose from. Make sure to do your research beforehand so that you aren’t choosing a company on a whim. That way you can pick one that will support you with everything you need to make your trip the best one yet.

If you would like to support local on your trip to Paphos, we recommend using Paphos Car Hire. They are an agency native to Paphos, with a huge knowledge of the area, so if you want a company that will be able to tell you where all the best hidden secrets of Cyprus are, they’re the ones to use.

Alternatively, if you want to save a few pennies without scrimping on service, Budget Car Hire are the ones for you. This highly recommended car rental agency offers a range of affordable options so that you can explore the city and surrounding areas without worrying about breaking the bank.

Top Road Trips from Paphos

Paphos is a stunning place full of a rich, cultural history. There are endless beaches, archaeological ruins, and incredible landscapes to explore, but once you’ve looked around you might want to think about travelling a little further out. If that is the case, there are plenty of places that are a short drive away, from Petra tou Romiou (more commonly known as Aphrodite’s Rock), to the Archaeological Site of the Tombs of the Kings.

However, if you fancy travelling a little further afield, why not drive the hour and a half to the Akamas Peninsula National Park? This protected area of outstanding natural beauty is truly incredible, and well worth the drive.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Paphos airport

What’s the best area to stay in Paphos?
If this is your first time in Paphos and you’re looking for the best place to see and explore a bit of everything, then make sure you stay in Kato Paphos. A top holiday resort in Cyprus, this area has everything you need, from beaches and bars, to restaurants and activities for all the family. It has a great mixture of tourist attractions and local sites, so you’ll be able to get a real taste of Paphos whilst you are there.
What is the cheapest time to go to Paphos?
We would recommend avoiding the summer months if you wish to avoid raised prices. February to March and October to November are much cheaper, and the weather is still pleasant enough to enjoy during these months too.
What is the best time to go to Paphos?
The best time to visit Paphos is in the spring, which is normally around March to April. It is around this time that the weather gets pleasantly warm whilst the costs are still low enough as it isn’t quite tourist season. If you want to go when the weather is hotter, make sure to visit from May to August to make the most of the Cypriot beaches.
Can you get around Paphos without a car?
Paphos is a small city, so it is relatively easy to get around most of it on foot if you are relatively active. However, for longer journeys the public transport in the city and across Cyprus isn’t particularly reliable, so if you want to get out and explore more of the country then we would definitely recommend hiring a car to do so. Not only will you be able to see more of this beautiful place, but you will have the opportunity to do so on your own time, rather than following an inconsistent timetable.

Alamo is situated on the airport road and accessed by minibus from a well sign posted bus stop. It’s worth having their phone number handy because they’re popular and busy. Have your passport driving license credit card and paperwork to hand for a first rate speedy service. If it’s dark whip out your mobile and take some pictures of the car for later reference if required. The staff are on the ball and show you round the car to log any damage but it’s easy to miss things in the dark. In hot countries you should check the condition of windscreen wiper blades as they can deteriorate even without using them! Easy to miss!

Do not do just a cursory examination of the car before you sign off on the damage form. Make sure you have every scratch, dent and any damage to the paint properly recorded. You do not want to find out that the deposit you put down when you rented the car is being held for damage you did not do. Also, I would recommend buying the additional insurance available to you. You will not need the most expensive plan, but the CDW that comes with your credit card will leave you exposed.

Paphos Airport is a very quick place to pass through. I would always recommend KEM Rental Cars as you are met at the airport very easily and taken to their office a couple of kms away, away from all of the queueing at other rental desks. Always expect the unexpected with Cypriot drivers, most are good but some are very scarey and like to speed and overtake where any normal person wouldn't dream to do. Around the Polis area more than Paphos, you could find that some traffic lights appear to be more advisory than law to some locals. The use of a mobile phone whilst smoking a cigarette and overtaking can also be commonplace in the more remote areas of the Island. Always, I repeat, always obey the many speed restriction signs despite what some of the Cypriot drivers may do. The Police do carry out random speed checks. You will find, in the Polis region especially, that at least one in every three vehicles is a twin- cab pickup, these vary from brand new, big wheeled sporty jobs to scrap on wheels. It's quite a shock to the system to see so many in one place. Always hang your right arm out of the window during the summer months (if you're not on the phone or smoking). All cars with red number plates are hired vehicles so they will almost certainly be driving more carefully than other road users, a fact that is the complete opposite of most other European countries. These hired vehicle are also known as "Z-Cars" Please do park anywhere, regardless of anyone else.

We had our camping gear with us on the trip to Cyprus. This gave us opportunity to camp next to the sea in camping area. It gives lot more freedom, if you have a rented car and camping gear with you. It also saves money, since camping is less costly compared to staying in the hotel.

Always happy to travel to a small airport. No delays and you don't have to be there hours before your flight. Staff was really nice and friendly. One of the most positive aspects about the airport staff was the fact that everyone was fluent in English AND Greek, which is paramount for an airport that deals with so many tourists. Airport in excellent location if you have hired a car and want to visit another city straight away. I would no doubt fly to Paphos Airport again!

The airport is 20 min away from the city. The road leading there is quite good. There are several car-rental companies at the airport's parking lot and around, so there's no problem to reach them, even with a shuttle bus. Sometimes a call to a company is needed in order to pick you up from the airport, but usually those shuttle buses run regularly every 10-15 mins. The airport is much smaller than the one in Larnaka, that's why it's much comfortable inside, e.g. no big crowds. There several car-rental counter inside.

Paphos is a fabulous place. Getting about is not particularly easy at the moment as many of the roads are up, so be warned! Good tavernas, serving local food are becoming increasingly hard to find but are well worth searching out. Visit the Kolios Winery for wine tasting and a meze with the bonus of wonderful views and a tour of the winery. Agios Georogios and Latchi are well worth visiting to enjoy a walk along the beach or a swim and a meal in the local tavernas. Kakopetria, in the Troodos mountains offers a wonderful, renovated Cypriot village and the opportunity to have a delicious meal at The Mill (try the trout). If you paraglide, try Aphrodite's rock or Curium.

Definitely hire a car beforehand to go exploring and visit nearby towns and villages. The beach areas in paphos are excellent, but there are some others out with, such as coral bay.

Recommend dropping passengers/luggage off first at the departure terminal and then returning the car to save having to push the bags from the return location back to the departure terminal.

Paphos is a good centre from which to travel to other parts of Cyprus. There is plenty to see and do in Paphos both culturally and sporting wise. We would recommend a to visit the tombs of the Kings and the Roman mosaics. While it is getting more difficult to find a genuine Cypriot taverna they are well worth tracking down both for the atmosphere and the food.

If you have an concerns report them straight away and be firm. Preserve and be patient things tend to take some time to resolve as the Cypriot way is very laid back.
