Be ready to use your roaming, there is no pay phone, but service desk representative was very friendly and helpful, so she offered her phone

Don’t withdraw money at the airport as the exchange rate is much worse than in town. Use Uber as far less expensive than the taxis.

The Sixt office at Zagreb airport is quick and efficient and the vehicles are a 2 minute walk form the arrivals hall. This is one of the quickest and easiest rental car pickups you will experience anywhere. Get your vehicle and head to the coast. Take a slow drive around the Istria peninsula and then down the coast past Split. Take some time to see Krk on the way. Take your time and stop often to enjoy the scenery, the warm water of the Adriatic, the fresh and delicious seafood, and the friendly locals. This is a place to slow down and relax.

This is a new airport. There are not very many shops or cafes. Too bad that the generic Nero Cafe is there, serving substandard coffee. On the positive side, the airport is full of light, spacious. And equally important, the toilets are clean. On the whole, employees are polite and helpful.

1. Don't assume all tour attractions are at the coast. Cities like Varazdin are charming, and off-the-beaten (tourist) track. 2. Croatia is home to the BEST pizza in the world! (I've been to 94 countries, and tried the pizza in all) Croatia wins hands-down! 3. Plitvice is just stunning. The water falls are beautiful. You can't leave Croatia without going to Plitvice. 4. You MUST try Burek - a pastry many Croatians have for breakfast or a quick snack. Choice of meat, cheese, potato or spinach. 5. All the coastal cities are stunning, but I'd have to say Split is my favorite. So many ruins and beaches by day plus a great nightlife. 6. Croatia is wine country. Find a wine-tasting excursion. You'll thank me later (don't drive! Go by van!). 7. Runners up (but by no means inferior): Zagreb the capital and Dubrovnik-100's of little hidden shops and picturesque buildings. 8. Most forgotten and overlooked? If you like nature, go southeast of Dubrovnik for the most stunning, breath-taking mountains!

Massive improvement from the old airport, but they need to sort out the rent-a-car parking - it's impossible to search for cars with luggage and walking around the parking.

Rise at sunrise to have the best attractions all to yourself while avoiding crowds. Don’t sweat the stuff you can’t control. Life is much too short to be angry & annoyed all the time. Laugh At Yourself You will definitely look like a fool many times when traveling to new places. Rather than get embarrassed, laugh at yourself. Stash Extra Cash Cash is king around the world. To cover your ass in an emergency, make sure to stash some in a few different places. Meet Local People Make it a point to avoid other travelers from time to time and start conversations with local people. Observe Daily Life If you really want to get a feel for the pulse of a place, I recommend spending a few hours sitting in a park or on a busy street corner by yourself just watching day to day life happen in front of you.

When booking accomoditation look for private parking because parking is very hard to find in Zagreb with some places only being able to pay for max 2 hours of parking before needing to re-park.

Not necessary to pre book a car ahead, when we got to Zagreb the only car rental place that had a line up was Fleet, all the others were waiting for customers.
