About Car Rental at Dubrovnik Airport

Lose yourself in the romance and rich culture of a true jewel of Europe; Dubrovnik. Situated in southern Croatia on the Dalmatian Coast, overlooking the Adriatic Sea, there really is no finer setting to plan an idyllic getaway. Upon first setting foot in the city, it is easy to see why it is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site, as you become immersed in the medieval architecture of the Old Town, surrounded by beautiful piazzas, terracotta rooftops, and limestone streets. And if that alone doesn’t sweep you off your feet, there is plenty of opportunity to partake in water sports, as well as excursions out to local islands for sandy beaches and natural wonders.

Dubrovnik Airport, also known as Čilipi Airport, is the international airport of Dubrovnik and the third busiest in Croatia in terms of passengers. It is comparatively small against other international airports around the world, but the terminal building has recently been rebuilt to increase the capacity. It is modern and easy to navigate, but it can still get busy so be sure to factor that in when you’re planning your arrival and departure. You can find the car rental desk just outside of the Arrivals Hall, with familiar names such as Sixt, Thrifty, and Avis offering their services to you.

Be very careful regarding what is offered by the rental company at this airport. The trip through the Neum corridor (portion of Bosnia that separates the southmost part of Croatia from the rest of the country) is included in the rental agreement. The salesperson made it sound like I would need to pay 9 euros/day extra for traveling in this direction and then, when I looked at the agreement, made it sound like they misunderstood me. The fact that I was returning the car in Zadar made it clear I would be going in this direction. In addition, when I turned down this coverage and the extra insurance, the salesperson told me that this was very risky since Sixt in Croatia did not deal with anyone out of country. Essentially they were using scare tactics to try and sell me something I did not need. The care itself was okay - some scratches and dents that needed to be identified by the individual checking the cars out. It is too bad the original impression from the person at the desk left such a bad impression as the rest of the trip was absolutely fine. This was not specific to my rental, While I was there the two people behind the desk sold three other individuals insurance for their rentals that was 300 euros on top of the rental. Once I have booked (and already paid) for the car, I would appreciate not having to go through the hard sell tactics. I have already made my decision and covered myself. I feel like this type of behaviour would definitely prey on older tourists. Beware!

Dubrovnik is very safe. Visit the old town and take a tour out on the water. Kayaking was a blast. The people are wonderful and the area is gorgeous. Croatia as a whole was very easy to drive through and gorgeous in every place we stopped. I will absolutely be back.

Krka national park is an absolute gem. I preferred it to Plitvice Lake although the natural beauty of plitvice is undeniable. It was hot and being able to swim at Krka was a highlight. Dubrovnik old town on the walls was exceptional at sunset with slightly less intense heat and fewer people!

Plan and research in advance. Know your facts and the company’s policies so you can’t be taken advantage of. We noted that different airlines have different rules and procedures. We weren’t aware of some of these and missed a flight. First time traveling in Europe so things can be challenging. Really appreciated when the agents knew English! Good idea to know about the airline baggage policies in advance and if you need car rental insurance or not.

The airport is small, compact and in our experience very busy, we had no issues within the airport both arrivals & departures were fairly free flowing and trouble free. There is room for additional restaurant facilities, both the cafes were small and had lengthy queues & sold limited items. My partner is vegetarian so selection was even more limited. Externally the construction work was noisy & dusty, while we waited to collect our hire car. The car hire outlets are crammed together away from the terminal and there is very little space for all the customers & the cars they are there to hire. Most of the cars were covered in dust. Better signage to the car rental area would help as when we used the telephone help point no one answered the phone and there was no indication of where to go or what to do next.

If you are just wanting to see the old town, you will not need a rental car. There are very few parks and cars are not allowed in that part of the city. If you want to explore Croatia, Montenegro and/or Bosnia and Herzegovina then having a car is a great way yo get around and explore places on and off the tourist routes. We had a really great time and enjoyed the city of Dubrovnik but loved the smaller towns further South, on and off the coast!

Spend a couple days there, lots to do and see, make sure you swim from the city walls. Park well away from the center, avoid parking hassles.
