Airport is great. Budget is not far away. Great fleet of cars . Buy the full coverage when you reserve the car. That way you don’t have to buy the local policy.

Departure: Airport was very clean. Lots of little shops and food court. Tons of selection at the gift shops with friendly staff. Arrival: duty free was small but good. The lines were long for security/baggage but that's to be expected

Clean airport which is clean and easy to navigate. There is plenty to do and a variety of food choices. When leaving the airport, if you've rented a car, follow the car rental signs to find your shuttle service outside the terminal. If you are getting a taxi, Uber is a much better service than the official city taxi's as you can track your route and it costs approximately half as much. Harassment and inappropriate behaviour is common in the official city taxis so if you do decide to get one of these, sit in the back and follow the route on maps.me or Google. San Jose is great for a couple of nights, but the surrounding area has much more to offer (national parks, volcanoes, swimming holes etc) which are better visited over multiple says rather than day trips due to traffic/slow roads.

Landing at the airport it seemed quite quiet and small in the dark. When we left at the end of our holiday it was large and very manic. Costa Rica a lovely friendly country every one smiling and helpful. We went for the bird watching and it was marvelous. hotels great food excellent. Driving can be a bit hairy in the country side, lots of steep narrow roads, but most drivers a pretty considerate. In San Hose the driving is Manic. There are lots of road side cafes and restaurants they really make you welcome. Hotels and Lodges, very helpful and go the extra mile for thier guests. One things that impressed was the cleanliness. very little litter. public toilets very clean. Costa Rica great holiday destination.

There is so much to do, to see and to experience. Too much to describe. The main tip I can give, is to eat where the locals eat :-) And if you like windsurfing, lake Arenal has a loooot of wind. There is a good windsurf center called Tico Wind with good rentals and lessons. Also good for kite surf.
