I THOUGHT CALGARY AIRPORT ITSELF WAS VERY EASY TO NAVIGATE THROUGH FROM THE AEROPLANE TO THE RENTAL CAR TERMINAL, THIS IS SITUATED OUTSIDE OF THE AIRPORT AND IS ACCESSED VIA A LIFT. WE ARRIVED VERY LATE AT NIGHT SO IT WAS RELATIVELY QUIET SO WE DID NOT HAVE TO QUEUE VERY LONG GETTING THROUGH CUSTOMS, PICKING UP OUR LUGGAGE OR GOING TO PICK UP OUR CAR. THERE WAS NO CHARGE FOR THE TROLLEYS EITHER IN THE AIRPORT WHICH WAS A BONUS AS YOU ARE ALWAYS TRYING TO FIND LOOSE CHANGE IN YOUR POCKET AFTER A LONG FLIGHT AND MOST OF THE TIME YOU DONT HAVE ANY PLUS THERE WERE PLENTY OF THEM AROUND, THE STAFF IN THE AIRPORT ARE ALSO VERY FRIENDLY AND HELPFUL, BE AWARE THOUGH THAT IT IS A LONG WALK FROM THE PLANE TO GET BAGGAGE, THIS WAS THE ONLY DOWNSIDE

Immigration services were fast and easy. The airport was clean and tidy. The volunteers at the airport were polite and very helpful. One guy (Andrew?) helped us contact our rental car company and instructed us where to find the shuttle bus. At our return trip, the checkin process was easy and fast. The airline staff were patient and smile all of the time. The terminals were easy to find. Finally, the Aspire lounge at Terminal E was fantastic!

Simple, clean airport easily accessed from the city (though the approach roads need some TLC). I flew with WestJet to Denver and was able to check in using the mobile app to save time dropping off my bag. All the US flights are pre-cleared for immigration and depart from the E gates in the new terminal extension. If you have a Priority Pass, you can enter the lounge just beyond security near the Burger King, which was a pleasant way to spend a few hours before my flight. Boarding is efficient, and the halls are very spacious, so the terminal never feels too crowded. When arriving from Germany the week earlier, passengers were greeted by volunteers wearing cowboy hats, which was a fun way to start my trip to Canada.

We visited Calgary for five days. We visited Heritage Park, the Zoo, and Banff National Park. All were well worth the money. My personal favorite was the Zoo, the array of animals they have and cleanliness was impressive. Two hours from Lake Louise we had to check it out and our experience was wonderful however, also worth the drive is Lake Moraine. It has stunning views and seemed a more private than Lake Louise.

Long walk from baggage claim to pick up rental car - be prepared to carry bags a distance. Airport was very clean and wide open, not busy. Good to become familiar with car before leaving the pickup counter and have a sense of where to go before getting into the car due to my lack of preparedness. It took me a little while to find the gas cap release button.

Calgary's airport is very easy to navigate. Some of the rental companies are onsite and some are very close to the airport. Security and Customs was done at Calgary itself for passengers traveling to US. It was a hassle free checkin with nobody in the queue. Due to limited plane's cabin capacity for carry on luggage, they were checking in bags for free.

Use Avis. Less costly, more convenient since it’s at the airport (literally 5m compared to 90m to rent the car), and much better car!

I'm from the U.S. and didn't know you had to prepay gas for almost every gas station. What we didn't know about prepay was that even though you select a prepay amount of $50 and only actually fill up $45, you only pay for the $45. Another tip, check out Banff if you have time. It's not that far from Calgary and so worth it. I would not recommend staying in Banff, but rather in Canmore. Canmore is much more quiet and has all the amenities you'll need.

If you do rent from Routes, once you pick-up your luggage from baggage claim make a call to Routes and ask for a shuttle pick-up. It's not that short of a walk from baggage claim to the pick-up location and the shuttle does take some time to reach the airport since the office is located off-site. At the counter, when they start asking if you want to purchase insurance, if you didn't already do so from your own source I would consider it. They aren't kidding when it comes to windshield damage. There are a lot of loose rocks on the road and on both times I've rented with Routes, I've gotten a few large chips on the windshield. And on one occasion the chip turned into a crack, but luckily Routes was kind enough not to charge me for the damage as they were going to replace the window anyway!

Calgary Airport is far from downtown. Requires taxi to downtown. The car rental companies at airport charge an additional $100 over car rental companies not inside airport. Calgary is a large airport. It's also very clean. If you are willing to pay an additional fee to rent the cars at the airport, the location of car rental is centralized, and it's easy to get to if you are walking inside the airport. A shuttle to car rental is not needed. Ride Share is very common in Calgary, so prices to get to the city are reasonable.

If you are heading into the mountains from Calgary, and do not wish to see any sights downtown, follow the Google Maps instructions to access Highway 1. They will route you through the north end of Calgary and save quite a bit of time. Once in the mountains, a stop in scenic Banff is essential. On our way home, we stayed in the Marriott in the Calgary airport terminal because we had a very early morning flight. This saved us tons of time and sleep. It also allowed us to leisurely walk to the check-in area without needing to go outside, which is a big treat in the wintertime!

Get global entry which includes TSA pre-check. It helps you through the TSA lines and customs. Bring a car mount for your phone so you can use it for GPS instead of renting one. When traveling as a couple, choose two isle seats so you can get up and walk around. Get a selfie stick for pictures. Be willing to try new things!

Go right to shuttle stall #21 and #22 at the Calgary arrivals level. That's where the Routes shuttle picks up. I had difficulty finding the courtesy phone to Routes inside the airport, so it's best to carry their number with you and ring them when you're ready for pick-up.
