The main airport in Cameroon is the Douala International Airport, which is located in the city of Douala, the largest city in the country. Although there is an international airport in the current capital of Cameroon (Yaoundé), the one located in Douala receives the most passengers annually.
At this airport, there is only one car rental agency, AVIS, which is one of the world’s leading car rental companies. It is a great option if you want to rent a car in a world-renowned agency. Taking into account that there is only one rental company at the airport, we’d recommend that you plan your car hire well in advance, just to make sure you get the best deal possible. Given that this is the only agency at the airport, the cars here are in very high demand - which is why booking in advance is so important.
As there is only one car rental company at the airport, you might want to consider getting a rental car in Douala, where there are around 10 agencies to choose from. Here, you can expect to find a lot of international brands, such as AVIS and Enterprise.
If you are choosing this option, however, make sure you keep in mind that the national currency in Cameroon is the Central African CFA Franc, and most car rental agencies only accept this currency in cash as a method of payment. If you choose to go for a car rental in the city, we’d recommend booking well in advance online, instead of carrying lots of cash with you to rent a car.
In order to legal drive a car in Cameroon, you will have to have an internationally approved driver’s license. This can be obtained before you leave, as it can be pretty tricky to get hold of one once you are in the country. It is also important to note that the drive must keep the following on them at all times: personal identity documents, local driver's license (or the international certificate approved in Cameroon), passport and car insurance documents. If you drive without these documents, you risk getting yourself a hefty fine, and even a month’s prison sentence if you aren’t careful.
Other handy tips to consider when driving in Cameroon are:
If AVIS isn’t the one for you, you can choose to rent a car from one of the local agencies. Among them, Cameroon Rental is a popular option, which, although it has somewhat high prices, offers several payment methods which can be useful if you do not have the currency of Cameroon in cash. As well as this, the company is known for having excellent customer service, with the employees able to give advice on best trips to take and any other advice you may need.
Another company that is worth checking out is F-Enterprises, which is a slightly cheaper alternative and has a large selection of cars to choose from. The good thing is that this agency has an active website, and you can make the reservations online well in advance.
There are different cities and places outside of Douala and Yaoundé that you should definitely visit if you are in Cameroon. One of these cities is Limbe, which is ideal for visitors looking to explore the beauty of Mount Cameroon and its surroundings. The city's botanical gardens are an ideal place to learn about nature and wildlife in the mountainous region, before exploring the local waterfalls and the national park.
The Campo Ma’an National Park is also a must visit for those coming to the area for the first time. This huge national park covers a massive 264,000 hectares – which is great if you want to spend plenty of time out in nature. The landscapes enclosed within this large area incredibly diverse, as you would expect in such a large space. From mountain ranges to rainforests, the varied landscape is home to birds, mammals, and even sea turtles, which make their nests on the beaches within the park.
