About Hobart Airport in Australia

Hobart International Airport is located in Cambridge, 17 km northeast of Hobart. It is the major passenger airport in Australia and maintains a conjoined international and domestic terminal. It operates domestic flights predominantly to the airports of Melbourne and Sydney. Hobart Airport was opened in 1956. The airport is situated on a narrow peninsula which makes takeoffs and landings inevitably directed over bodies of water regardless of approach or departure direction. The region immediately surrounding the airport remains largely unpopulated which enables the airport to operate curfew-free services. This is a good reason to rent a car which you can pick up at the Hobart airport. That way you don’t have to wait for public transport and can explore Hobart right away.

Going to Tasmania in summer is a great idea to escape the heat in the mainland (although Tasmania could get pretty hot too). Unless you are from a place where the winter is snowing and the summer is only 20 C top, please pack up both spring/autumn and summer clothing. If you like hiking, then you'd love to go to various national parks - which are very beautiful. If you go in group/ family and plan to go to more than one national parks , then it is worth to purchase the holiday pass. This pass is currently $60 and lasts for 8 weeks and you can enter all national park in Tasmania up until 8 people for a car. Depending on your plan and budget, driving a car to explore the island would be one of the best way to have your adventure.

Check the weather forecast for the days that you will be overseas so you will know what to pack. Bring snacks and water on the road because food places might be hard to find especially in the wilderness. Accomodation is important as you will be spending alot of time there, book from reliable sources such as AirBnB. Bring enough cash to last for your trip. Keep your belongings like cash and passport close to you and always check on then from time to time. Coins are important especially in Australia where you have to pay for roadside parking.

If using a car parking building in Hobart, be aware that some have the first 90 minutes free. After the cost we have endured in Auckland, this was a blessing. Things I do. Plan the days visits, etc, start early, always keep the petrol tank topped up and drive within speed limits as this is more relaxing.

Do not carry any fruit as Tasmania is on the verge of a fruit fly outbreak and the need our help. Carry all relevant paperwork in you carry on luggage for easy access. Use that easily accessible paperwork for the hire car and get the car sorted before getting your luggage. The Avis team will be so efficient you will have the keys before the luggage comes off the plane. Do not be afraid of a larger car as the commodore we hired used less fuel that a small car we hired last time. Allow plenty of time as there is so much to see in Tasmania. In the off season there are plenty of deals to be had with accommodation so think twice before booking ahead. Be prepared to put on weight as the food is great. Grab a coffee from the coffee shop at luggage pickup as it was great coffee. Slow down and enjoy the more relaxed lifestyle this wonderful state will afford you.

Spend a few days wandering the sights of Hobart. Lovely town which can be explored on foot. Many delightful, eateries, bars and places to listen to music. A sail on the Derwent is a must. Don't miss the views from Mt Wellington nor a trip to Moana on the boat.

Oatlands is a beautiful gem full of Georgian architecture and seems better preserved than many other more well known towns - MONA had an outstanding exhibition on the meaning of art that is as good if not better than anything I have seen in mainland galleries.

Hobart is a relatively small city so seeing the highlights is achievable in a day. Following a walking tour particularly around Battery Point and the inner city enables you to see the sights. The main streets in town run one-way from east to west and parking is generally metered. Driving is pleasurable in and around Hobart and trips to Mt Wellington and to nearby wineries are a must. Another highlight is to take the car ferry from Kettering to beautiful Bruny Island to spend a day or longer experiencing the remote beauty of this place. January is an ideal time to travel south to get away from the stiflingly high temperatures on the mainland.

Tasmanian whiskey, MONA art and Salamanca markets in Hobart. Great drive across the top on Highland lakes road seeing 1300 year old pencil pines. A swim in the Meander falls but make sure its January.

Hobart is often overlooked and only used as a jumping off point to see the rest of Tasmania. I would recommend spending some time in Hobart itself to soak up the culture and beautiful architecture, walk around the market, hit up some cool pubs, and check out MONA. If you play your cards right and talk to the right locals, you might even find a place to see a platypus in the wild right near the city!
