About Car Rental at Hobart International Airport

Hobart International Airport is located in the city of Tasmania, Australia, and is one of the busiest international airports. As it is only 30 minutes from the capital of Tasmania, it is no surprise that it is chosen by millions of passengers every year.

If you want to start your trip with full freedom as soon as you land, we’d recommend renting a car as soon as you arrive into the country. At the airport, you will find the best-known companies, such as AVIS, Budget, Hertz, Alamo Australia, among many others. What makes this an ideal option is that many of these companies offer several methods of payment, so you can easily pay well in advance, should you choose to do so.

Downtown Car Rental at Hobart

Choosing to rent a car at the airport, while more convenient, can be a little more expensive. But, fear not, this doesn’t mean there aren’t other options available to you. If you travel into the city, there are plenty of other car rental agencies available to you. In the city itself, you can still use companies such as Hertz, Sixt and Budget, but you will also have the option to choose a local agency too, should you wish to go with that option.

If you do decide to go with a local agency, it is always recommended that you try to pay with cash where possible.

Driving in Hobart

Driving through Tasmania is undoubtedly a wonderful experience, as its roads are very well maintained, constantly kept clear, and it has one of the most fabulous landscapes in the world. However, this does not mean that it is easy. The biggest threat to tourists is the number of animals that roam the roads, which is very common throughout the whole of Australia and should be taken extremely seriously.

Some extra tips you might want to keep in mind when driving in and around Hobart are:

Taste of Tasmania over the Xmas New Year period at the Hobart Pier is the best event I have experienced in years with so much international flavour as well as the best of Tasmania`s own private small companies selling the finest of wines, ciders and beers. This also included amazing foods and natural products all manufactured in Tasmania from all diversities of cultures now living in this great state of Australia. Hobart is such a picturesque city loaded with so much history and old English charm and is definitely a place to put on anyone's bucket list. Port Arthur is an amazing piece of Australian history to visit with its beautiful scenery and harbour wrapped up in a now very peaceful environment. Port Arthur`s old architecture of convict built houses, hospital, prisons and an amazing church structure show cases Australian history of the early 1800`s as a penal settlement for convicts as young as 7 years old being transported out from England to the then VanDiemans Land for being caught stealing something as small as a loaf of bread 3 times . Bridestow`s Lavender farm North West of Launceston is well worth a visit to wander down through the aisles of Lavender growing for acres around the farm area then to go up and try the various luscious tastes of lavender ice cream and pancakes etc, as well as many other lavender products including pure scented soaps and oils. Bridestow`s Lavender is exported throughout the world as the purest Lavender oil to be mixed with perfumes et

If you're going to Port Arthur from Hobart, give yourself maybe an hour and a half travel time each way, and make sure you have minimum two hours at the site itself. The Port Arthur penitentiary, based on Bentham's Model Penitentiary, is particularly interesting, and the site overall is as beautiful as it is tragic. Back in Hobart, definitely take the ferry up the river to the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA). It's very different from most other art museums, but also very user-friendly and accessible (apart from the 99 steps up to the museum from the ferry stop!) The Mawson's Hut replica museum down by the Hobart waterfront is worth a look, with quite a few original items from Mawson's expedition. You really get the feel of how claustrophobic it must have been to spend the Antarctic winter in those huts. If you like a tipple, try the Lark Whisky Distillery tour. They take you out to the distillery, then walk you through the whole process of making whisky, with sips along the way, and then a tasting back at the cellar door at the end.
