About Car Hire at Belfast International Airport

Belfast is one of the largest cities in Northern Ireland. Once recognised as the birthplace of the RMS Titanic, it is today respected for its role in popular shows like "Game of Thrones," as well as world-class music festivals and graffiti art. Apart from these sights, the main thing worth experiencing is true Irish hospitality! Belfast's restaurants and bars also make for a fun nightlife for visitors. What better way to see all that Belfast has to offer than by hiring a car?

Belfast International Airport (BFS) is one of the two airports that serve Northern Ireland and Europe. The highest number of passengers ever transported by the airport was approximately 6.2 million in 2017. The most important airlines at BFS are BH Air, EasyJet, Ryanair, TUI Airways, Virgin Atlantic, and Wizz Air. And flights to Ibiza, Amsterdam, Birmingham, Prague, and Geneva are popular from Belfast.

Depending on your needs, Belfast International Airport offers a variety of different car hire businesses. Once you arrive at the airport, make your way to the main terminal, where you will find the desks of the major car hire agencies. Sixt, Budget, Hertz, Avis, Sunnycars, and Enterprise are the top-rated car hire companies available at the airport. Depending on your requirements and budget, you can find a wide range of options, from a mini to an SUV. Do note that the majority of the country drives stick-shift cars. So, if you prefer an automatic transmission vehicle, consider calling your preferred agency and reserving your desired car ahead of time.

Downtown Car Hire in Belfast

Belfast's buses serve as the city's dependable public transit system. They might not, however, get you everywhere you need to go. Furthermore, if you are travelling for work or on your honeymoon, you do not want to be forced to rely solely on public transportation. Nothing beats driving into and out of Belfast from a central location in a hire car. You could also save money by hiring a car in town rather than at the airport. Due to the limited parking space at the airport for hire cars, you may even have more options in the city. Hiring a mid-size or full-size SUV ensures that you, your family, and all of your belongings will have enough space while on vacation. If you are travelling alone or with only two other people, a compact minivan or sedan may suffice. Whether you are travelling alone or with a companion, you should choose a vehicle that can meet all of your needs.

Driving in Belfast

Belfast and Ireland, in general, have delightful roads and stunning scenery and views. Here are a few rules of the road to keep in mind while driving to make your journey more enjoyable:

The top 5 automobile hire companies in Belfast are Ford, Nissan, Kia, Volvo, Audi, and Mercedes.

Top Road Trips from Belfast

Whether you intend to explore the countryside for its scenery or warm hospitality, Belfast has plenty to offer its visitors. Here are a few highly recommended destinations to visit by car:

Drive for about an hour from Belfast to Giant's Causeway in County Antrim. This pristine location, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is made up of over 40,000 interlocking hexagonal basalt columns. Some believe that these formations were formed by sparring giants, while others believe that they were formed by underwater volcanic eruptions. Other nearby attractions worth seeing are the Camel's Back, the Giant's Boot, and the Wishing Chair. All of these locations have their own myths and legends.

If you're looking for unspoiled land and peace and quiet on your Ireland vacation, head to Lake Lough Neagh, which is located on Oxford Island, about 30 minutes from the city centre. Apart from being a tourist attraction, you can learn about the importance of reeds, wildlife ponds, and meadows before walking towards Kinnego Marina, the region's largest marina. Water sports such as kayaking, canoeing, sailing, water skiing, and wakeboarding are available here before taking a jet boat to Coney Island to learn about the Normans' history.

Even though the cars ave very clean always check the windscreen by using the washers before you leave the car park. Always make sure you ask if you are unfamiliar with the make of car. Check if any roadworks are on your route as this can cause delays to journey time. A sat nav is also very handy and available from the hirer. Night time driving can be very daunting when not use to it with the very dark roads and bright light of the oncoming cars. Never drink and drive even if you think it’s only a short trip once behind the wheel you are in charge of the vehicle even with the engine switch off can you afford this to happen.

Keep an eye out as soon as you get into the arrivals hall for the car hire desk as you can easily walk past it. There’s a 5 minute walk from the airport terminal to the car hire collection car park. Make sure that you inspect the car for any marks as our diagram that we were given at the desk didn’t have all of the marks highlighted. There’s a kiosk adjoining the car park so ask an attendant to inspect the car with you and to highlight any additional marks otherwise you’ll be responsible for them upon returning the car. Allow time upon returning the car as we had to wait a good few minutes for ours to be inspected then sign off the return documents and walk to the terminal. All in all our first experience with Budget car hire at Belfast airport was great and we highly recommend them.

Be sure to put all toiletries, including toothpaste, creams, gels into hold luggage to get through security more quickly. Be sure to check all of your insurance is up to date. Whenever possible, hire your car at least a week ahead of travelling, so that all of your booking details are available online, and do remember to check you have all necessary documents available. I keep all of my documents and printouts together in an A4 wallet, so everything is easily accessible.

Remember to go to the Hertz desk before leaving the airport building. NI is very easy to drive in for an English person. You drive on the left and the roads are fairly quiet. You are in the countryside within 2 minutes of leaving the airport. We just hired a car for 1 day, and this was no problem as the office is open for long hours. The child booster seat was of very good quality compared to other's we have had with other car rental companies in other countries. We can recommend a trip to the Giant's Causeway and rope bridge, both of which you can easily visit in one day.

Loads to see and do in Ireland. A drive around lake Erne was an added bonus as was Lake Melvin. Bellick Pottery is worth a mornings visit, especially the scenic drive to get there. Walks along the beach at Bundoran and the brilliant cliff walk way is definitely worth visiting. Beautiful views of the Atlantic and interesting rock formations along the way. Look out for the fairy bridges in the rocks! Titanic Belfast was excellent. You could spend all day there as so much to read and see. Signage quite poor so work out how to get there beforehand!

- Read the Ts&Cs carefully on care hire rental agreements. Easy to be caught out by missing one and incur extra fees. - Turn up in good time at the airport. Lengthy queues at security have seen many people miss flights recently. - For car hire, book excess insurance via a third party for around £2 per day, save on the high prices they charge at the desk to avoid a massive excess for even a tiny scratch. - For car hire, check the car very carefully when you collect. Some hot cars are covered in small scratches. If they’re not all noted down, they could blame you for one!

Leave plenty of time to get through security. People are pleasant and friendly. As at many airports theu are rebuilding so it’s a bit hard to navigate departures. Would be nice if they had more Ulster products on sale. Generally clean all round. A nice airport to fly to and from

Visit the Giants causeway . to avoid car parking charges on the site ,use the Free Park and Ride in Bushmills. Free car parking + reduced entry fee if you use the bus. If you like to try Street Food go to St.Georges Market Fri.Sat.Sun. Use the city tour bus to hop on and off to see different things. The pass is valid for 2 days.

Travel, Relax and Explore! During my long holiday in Ireland, I travelled to the western part too- taking in the breath taking views and beauty of Western Ireland in a place call Geevagh, Co Sligo. On top of this I drove to the most breathtakingly beautiful, rugged place to surf- Easkey. Although I didn't go surfing, I sat in my car watching the mesmerising waves , hit against the rocks, whilst surfers were standing upright and taking on the waves! I would definitely explore more of this country further when I return again! Other highlights recommended- day wandering around Sligo town as well as a lovely, lunch amd coffee in the village of Boyle, County Roscommon.
