I know the city well and it is beautiful. * Spend time in the old town - Plaza Porticada and del Pombo area as well as on the fabulous beaches at the Sardinero, 3 or 4 km north of the city centre * Eat at El Riojano, a famous restaurant, established in 1940 and where a superb table d'hote lunch costs just €25, including wine * For golf fans, take a small ferry out to Pedrena, home of the late, great Seve Ballesteros, and play a round on the beautiful old course where he learnt the game * Santander is the capital of the region of Cantabria, which has many lovely medieval towns. An absolute must are Santillana del Mar and Barcena La Mayor while the 19th century town of Comillas is well worth a visit, as are the world renowned caves at Altamira * The wildlife park at Cabarceno is one of the finest in Europe and features wild birds of prey and dozens of animals, including the local brown bears * Finally, the local cuisine is legendary so make sure you tuck into the Pote Liebaniego (a delicious chick pea stew) and the sobaos / bizcochos (home made sponge cakes), among other local delicacies.
