Almeria, located on the southern coast of Spain in the province of Andalusia, is a favourite destination for tourists worldwide. This historically rich city combined with the beautiful Mediterranean climate makes Almeria one of the best places in Europe for a holiday.
Tourists and locals alike love Almeria. Alongside its cultural heritage, the city has been modernised in recent times, making it contemporary and trendy but without losing its historical ties. This makes Almeria one of the best cities to visit on a Spanish holiday. With an area of just over 12km², Almeria is easy to get around, either by walking, using public transport, or even better, by hiring a car.
Almeria Airport is the fourth-busiest in Andalusia and regularly processes over 1 million passengers a year. This is even more impressive given that it is not a particularly large airport, and many of its European routes only operate in the summer months – such as flights to Manchester, Birmingham, Brussels, Dublin, several Swiss airports and a few German airports, too. However, it still operates winter flights to cities including Madrid, Barcelona, Seville and London.
In addition, Almeria Airport is only located nine kilometres west of the city of Almeria, making it ideal to access the city from, as well as other areas in and around Andalusia.
There are plenty of amenities at Almeria Airport making it ideal for frequent travellers and tourists alike.
Due to its idyllic location on the south-eastern Iberian coast, Almeria is a popular destination for tourists and locals, but this also means that the road infrastructure makes it a safe place to drive. Furthermore, while there are nearby motorways to access other major Spanish cities such as Malaga and Seville, the small roads in and around Almeria can occasionally be tricky to navigate.
In addition, the “rush hour” (or rather, rush hours) can make the roads fairly congested, so if you can avoid travelling between the hours of 07:00 – 09:00 and 15:00 – 19:00 then your driving experience in Almeria will be much more positive. Here are some further driving tips when driving around Almeria:
Because of Almeria’s significance as a historically rich city in Andalusia, there’s plenty to do around here, whether you’re a solo traveller or on a family holiday.
For starters, the city of Almeria has plenty to offer, such as history-themed tours around some of the city’s oldest walls and ruins, which date back to the 11th century and earlier.
Alongside the historical tours available within Almeria, there is also plenty more to do in the city. For example, a visit to the Mercado Central de Almeria (Central Market of Almeria) offers you the chance to buy fresh, local produce from local Almerian suppliers, ranging from fresh fruits and vegetables to cured meats, coffee and anything else you can think of. It’s ideal for foodies, or even those who are staying in self-catering accommodation. The market was built in the late 19th century and is still in operation today.
Just outside of Almeria city, there are some beautiful hidden gems of the Andalusian coast to explore. Arrecife de las Sirenas is a coastal reef which is said to have a hypnotic (or extremely relaxing) vibe to it, as the waves crash gently upon the craggy rocks. Perfect for bringing a flask of tea and watching the world go by.
Additionally, for nature lovers, there are a couple of national parks near Almeria Airport. Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata-Níjar can be reached within a 40-minute drive from the airport, and is characterised by its volcanic rock formations, and is perfect for kayaking, snorkelling or simply just walking and admiring its sheer natural beauty. Meanwhile, Paraje Natural Sierra Alhamilla is an inland natural park which can be reached within a 45-minute drive from Almeria Airport. At this natural park, visitors can follow many of the established hiking trails for a fun day out.
There are six different car hire suppliers to choose from at Almeria Airport: Hertz, Special Rate, Keddy, Europcar, Dollar and Thrifty. With a range of different car types available at Almeria Airport, it can be quite overwhelming to choose which one best suits your needs. So here are some of our top picks, based on the different types and styles of cars available.
For those wanting a small car, the Ford Focus Sedan is a great choice. Perfectly built for small roads as well as a comfortable ride on the motorways, the Sedan is ideal for both couples and small families alike.
For something slightly larger, the Peugeot 508 is a prime example. Complete with air conditioning too – this car has extra boot space which is ideal for those on a longer holiday who naturally have more suitcases and bags to carry around. Plenty of room for souvenirs, too!
This SUV is perfect for something larger, and also for those who prefer to drive an automatic car rather than a manual.
This Spanish-made car really is fantastic when it comes to station wagons. Complete with air conditioning, extra boot space and plenty of storage, there are fewer cars more suited to the roads in and around Almeria Airport than the Seat Leon Estate.
