My luggage was lost through air Portugal. Venice airport was helpful, but the staff seems annoyed to help you. They do not give you enough information on how to retrieve your luggage. The only information I received was how to track my luggage on a claims site. They say you will be reimbursed for the inconveniences, but never give you the information on how to get the compensation or who to contact. The paperwork they provided me did not have anything regarding compensation. It only allows you see when your luggage was found if at all and you never know where it is or where they are sending it or when. They do help you make a file claim in lost luggage at the airport, but if you go to the list of lost items it's over 100 pages of lost claims.

Venice airport is very convenient. It's not large, and parts of it are old, but everything functioned smoothly for us. They have an excellent checked baggage facility. A lot of people don't want to bring all of their heavy bags in to Venice where it's difficult to get around. The bus to Venice was fairly convenient but it took quite a while and made lots of stops on the way. We returned to the airport by water taxi. It was considerably more expensive but super efficient, fast and seems like the Venetian way to go.

Allow plenty of time if picking up a car as there are long queues and very few small cars available even though you've booked one!

When traveling to Venice I would recommend a private taxi to get you to your location. Venice is a very complicated city to navigate. I would also recommend to pack minimally, if you have a lot of baggage it is difficult to manage the narrow "streets" and canal crossings. Do your best to know where you are going before you arrive, "streets" are poorly labeled and nothing like we are used to here in the US. The obvious stuff like St. Marks square, Rialto bridge, Murano and Burano Islands are the highlights. Overall beautiful place to visit, we only had a couple days but made the most of it.

Get a diesel if you intend on driving a lot. Pay attention to fuel costs in different countries and plan accordingly. Croatia is much cheaper than Italy! Buy your excess insurance separately, the hire companies tend to over price. Do pay attention to small details - my hire car did not have automated lights and windscreen wipers like my car at home. This caught me out once as I had put the lights on in the day (driving through a really long tunnel) and forgot to turn them off again. There was no alarm when leaving the car and so the next morning when we went to leave we had a flat car battery! Luckily, there was a garage around the corner and we got it resolved without the need to phone a breakdown company! Phew!

Travel light with comfortable shoes as there is a lot of walking. Be prepared for delays in queueing and dont get hassled by it. Take your time when looking for car rental desks, tickets for buses or Water taxi's.It pays to get exactly what you are looking for! Dont be afraid to ask for help and advise, people are generally helpful and friendly. Have you homework done on whatever specifics you are looking for or to do. Dont leave things to chance or until the last minute. It pays to be organised.

Normal airport. I would suggest dropping down the prices for luggage storage all day/overnight for people stopping just for the day...

The airport is small enough to get around without any issue. The information desk is not very obvious and other commercial desks use the information sign to promote their own business.

We we're travelling on to Selva in Val Gardena to ski. We took the motorway past Verona because, even though it wasn't the shortest route, we thought it would be fast and easy to navigate. We stopped at Revereto on the way for lunch and to stock up with provisions in the Lidl supermarket there. It was easy as the motorway has a junction on either side of town, so we sailed straight through. Total journey time, including the stop, was about 4:15Hrs.

Rent a smaller type car as you will leave it at a parking lot upon arrival in Venice (the islands) but it is also better when it comes to parking.

Venice is a great place to visit, but in summer there are a lot of other visitors, so be prepared for this! You don't need a rental car in Venice, but we rented a car to leave Venice and drive through Tuscany and Umbria to Rome. It was heavenly! Bologna, Siena, Orvieto, Sorano, Soraya, Pitigliano.... so many gorgeous places! We will be back!
