About Car Hire at Pisa Airport

Pisa is probably best known for an architectural project gone wrong. But the Leaning Tower of Pisa is just one of the many notable sights in this ancient city. Enchanting Romanesque buildings, Renaissance piazzas, Gothic churches, and a vibrant nightlife – you’ll quickly see why people fall in love with Pisa’s charm. Not to mention to the surrounding areas. Pisa is in the heart of Tuscany’s rolling hills, with tiny villages, vineyards, and farmland stretching for miles upon miles. It makes for a dreamy drive, cruising through ancient hamlets in the mountains with views of endless natural beauty. To explore Pisa and the wider Tuscany region by car is the best way to see it. No restrictions and no time constraints, on your own time and leisurely. How a visit to laidback Tuscany should be!

Pisa’s airport is officially named Galileo Galilei Airport, after the world-famous Pisan scientist, but it’s most commonly known as Pisa International Airport. The Car Hire Terminal is just 500 metres from the Passenger Terminal, about five minutes on foot. When you get there, you’ll see why there’s a whole terminal dedicated to car hire. Evidently, it’s a popular way to get around here! There are international, household name car hire brands like Sixt, Hertz, and Europcar, as well as wallet-friendly Budget. There’s a good mix of international brands and Italian, independent brands, such as Noleggiare and Maggiore, so it’s worth shopping around to find the deal for you.

Hiring a car in Pisa

Although hiring a car at the airport is convenient, there are extra charges and fees that can add up. If you want your trip to be as budget friendly as possible, there are some options in the city to avoid those fees. However, be aware that there are limited options for car hire in Pisa, so you might want to check ahead to ensure there’s availability if you don’t want to pay the extra fees at the airport. Centauro Rent-a-Car is a local car hire farm, primarily in Italy, Spain, Portugal, and Greece. The office is just outside of the airport, so you won’t have to go too far to avoid the fees! There’s another Europcar office just five minutes away from the airport, too.

Driving in Pisa

Pisa is surrounded by medieval walls which means there are limited traffic zones, so you have to be careful to not drive in these areas. You’ll see warning signs that say Zona Traffico Limitato or ZTL. Not to worry, there are plenty of parking spaces outside the walls. While Pisa is a walkable city, and walking actually is enforced in the city centre by the medieval walls, driving around the rest of Pisa is beautiful. And it's perfectly located to explore the rest of Tuscany and its other famous cities of Siena, Florence, and Lucca, as well as its gorgeous hills and vineyards.

Tips for driving in Pisa

Top road trips in Pisa

If you’re after a road trip with beautiful, sweeping views, you’re in luck. There’s the possibility of taking day trips or hitting the road for longer for a sense of adventure. Florence is just an hour-and-a-half drive away, making the perfect day trip destination. It’s the capital of Tuscany and the homeland of Renaissance, you could spend a good few days exploring the city. Other cities like Lucca and Siena are great for taking day trips from Pisa, too, and the drives to get there will be breathtaking. And if you don’t mind driving just a little bit longer, a trip to Cinque Terre is a must. The string of colourful ancient seaside villages along the rugged coastline are beautiful. Another great trip is the Chianti region and its many vineyards and quaint little villages – you'll probably want to spend the night after tasting a few wines!

Frequently asked questions about car rental Pisa airport

What is the best area to stay in Pisa?
There are plenty of fun and interesting neighbourhoods in Pisa. The best place to stay depends on what kind of trip you want. If you’re going to be hopping on the highway often, San Giusto is a quirky neighbourhood close to the Superstrada highway. It’s also budget-friendly - win-win! San Martino is another great option – it lies against the banks of the river, close to the city’s buzzing nightlife scene.
What is the cheapest time to go to Pisa?
The cheapest months to fly to Pisa are February and October.
What is the best time to go to Pisa?
Visiting Pisa and the rest of Tuscany is beautiful all year round, but we think the best time to visit is late September and through October. It’s during the shoulder season so prices will be lower than during the summer months, but the temperatures will still be pleasant. Plus, you get to experience the changing colours of the Tuscan countryside and the freshly harvested food.
Can you get around Pisa without a car?
Pisa itself is a walkable city but to take advantage of being in beautiful Tuscany, we recommend hiring a car. There are buses and trains but their timetables are catered towards the locals, not tourists. It also restricts the places you can visit and means your holiday is dictated by timetables. Also, travelling by public transport means you miss out on driving the living lanes, stopping every now and again to soak up the view, and finding off-the-beaten-path spots.

Take time to get used to your car. Beware that you are going to travel on the right Have a snack or coffee at the excellent restaurant Use the shuttle to the cars and don't try to walk there Follow the signs carefully that direct to the car hire parking Allow plenty of time to return the car before taking a flight Find out where the nearest petrol station to the airport is before leaving home to go to the airport Leave extra time for the possibility of holdups on the autostrada Be prepared to take a little time in taking photographs of any dents or damage to your hire car

Have €2 ready for luggage trolley at Pisa Airport. Large luggage pieces such as baby cot, car seat etc have to be checked in at separate check in area have enough time for that. Do rent a car as it gives you a chance to see so much more of the country you are traveling in.

That grade is for Pisa Airport, however the noleggiare office is not at the airport, but across the busy street with no clear path or crosswalk.

Always buy your car hire insurance policy before you leave the country, this way you don’t need to pay for additional insurance at the desk. Download a sat nav to your phone before you travel saving your money. Do your homework about where you are visiting making sure you know where the company is situated on leaving the airport. Take a map of the area as backup. Take an in car charger for your phone for the sat nav. Always check over the vehicles properly before setting off. Make sure u have enough space on your credit card for the deposit. Don’t forget your driving license. Print out 2 copies of your voucher.

It's really worth using Google Map / Street View to familiarise oneself with the airport layout etc, especially as at Pisa, the Joyrent (etc.) car hire compound is some distance away from arrivals 750m/9mins walk according to Google Map, although it felt less). There is a courtesy bus, but if there is a large queue it's quicker to walk. The bus stop is the far side of the bus park, outside arrivals. Google Map / Street View is also great for familiarising oneself with all aspects of any journeys you need to undertake. Route plan preparation takes a lot of stress out of the holiday, even if you have Sat Nav. Expect a tedious wait at the car hire desk. then if there isn't one, you'll feel pleased. This applies to both at the beginning and the end of the holiday. In fact, as with any airport, always expect and give yourself time for a lot of queuing at check in, security, pass port control and finally in the departure area.
