About car hire at Naples Airport

Welcome to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. You wouldn’t be judged for travelling to the southern Italy city just to try its world famous pizza. But Naples has a lot to offer. Sprawling markets, the catacombs of San Genaro, the enchanting hidden city, and churches galore. Not to mention the looming Mount Vesuvius.

Naples International Airport is just a 20 minute drive from the city. If you want to explore the city and its neighbouring towns, beaches, and natural hotspots by car, you have plenty of options. There are several globally recognised car hire agencies, including Herz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Enterprise, and more. Watch out for budget friendly favourites like the aptly named Budget. It isn’t just the multinational car agencies, either. Italian car hire agencies like B-rent are also reputable firms and tend to be cheaper.

Hiring a car in Naples

If you want something lighter on the wallet, your best bet is to hire a car in Naples. Hiring a car off-site generally means you avoid extra costs, such as ‘location-based fees’. Naples is the third biggest city in Italy, after Rome and Milan, so you’ll find plenty of places to pick up a car. There are several around the Maritime Station, including Budget and the Italian car hire firm, Autonoleggio. Venturing further into the city centre you’ll come across a few options of big name brands, including Hertz, Avis, and Europcar. However, the majority are independent, Italian agencies. There’s Locauto, Maggiore, Noleggio, and Italia Rent, to name a few. They’re all in the same area, so shopping around to get the best deal is easy. Also, you’ll see lots of scooters and vespas dotted around the city. If you want to travel like a local and zip around Napoli, there are plenty of specialist options, such as Napolirent.

Driving in Naples

The Old Town of Naples is the largest in Europe, and driving old roads is notoriously challenging. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world, so expect narrow alleyways and locals who have their own road laws. It’s tricky to find parking, too. Despite that, driving in Naples is often described as ‘pleasurable chaos’. Many people get around on vespas, so if you’re planning on just spending time in the city, this could be an easier option while also being unique.

Tips for driving in Naples

Top roads trips in Naples

There’s so much to see in Southern Italy, and the Amalfi Coast is high on many people’s wish lists. From Naples, you can get to Sorrento in just under an hour, but we recommend spending a few days hopping around the clifftop towns and seaside villages. There’s no doubt that driving yourself along the Amalfi Coast is the best way to see the much sought after destination, just be on guard for local drivers weaving in and out of lanes.

Whether you weave it into your Amalfi Coast trip or simply take a day trip, visiting Pompeii is an absolute must-see. There are tourist guides who can take you there with a group, but taking yourself means going by your own schedule. Roaming through the ancient streets is nothing short of amazing, many people actually recommend staying in Pompeii for a couple of nights to truly appreciate it. You can try to see the whole city, including all of its sites, in one day, but it’ll be extremely tiring. Especially on a hot day, as there’s little to no shade. Also, staying for a few nights means you can easily visit Pompeii’s destroyer, Mount Vesuvius. Attempting to visit Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day would be extremely tiring, especially if you’re planning on hiking it! If you don’t want to stay over, hiring a car means you can easily spends a few days going back and forth from Naples - it’s just a short 25 minute drive.

Frequently asked questions about car rental Naples airport

What is the best area to stay in Naples?
The Old Town, or Centro Storico, is considered the heart of Naples. The area’s been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995, and staying in a medieval house on a cobbled street sounds great to us. You’re in and around the city’s history and culture, with cathedrals, churches, and museums aplenty. With choices ranging from luxury to budget, there’s something to suit everyone’s wallet. If you want something trendy, in the heart of the city’s top notch shopping, Chiaia is the place to stay. It’s upscale and op
What is the cheapest time to go to Naples?
The cheapest time to visit Naples is during the low season - November through to February, excluding the Christmas holidays. Visiting at this time means you not only get cheaper flights and accommodation, but you also bypass the tourist crowds.
What is the best time to go to Naples?
While visiting the Southern Italian coast during summer sounds bliss, it’s not quite the same with Naples. Long lines, higher rates, and limited air conditioning along with the sizzling heat can make this city a frenzy. From March to early June, the temperature is generally at a comfortable level. You’ll find discounted rates and the crowds will be much less intense than during the summer.
Can you get around Naples without a car?
Yes, the most common form of public transport in Naples is bus. However, like driving, the roads in Downtown Naples aren’t suitable for buses, so you’re likely to be stuck in traffic for a while. And when it comes to exploring the area beyond the city, running on a bus schedule always puts limitations on your plans. If you want to experience the neighbouring towns, beaches, historical sites like Pompeii, and natural wonders like Mount Vesuvius, all without restrictions, we recommend hiring a car.

the airport is quite small and compact, there's not a lot of walking required. The signage is not great so be vigilant. On arrival we had a few issues finding the bus stop for the courtesy bus to the car hire area, it's a bit lost in the many road works going on there at the moment (feb 2020). On departure, get the duty free/airport shopping done before you head through to your gate. At the gates for Ryan Air a small bottle of water set us back €2.50. There are lots of shops/restaurants in the main airport before you need to venture to the gates (5 minutes walk away).

Upon renting a vehicle, make sure to take a ticket as soon as you arrive to get your service number established. always try to arrive 2 hours early for any flights outside of US b/c one never knows whats around the corner. Customs, check-in, passport check, luggage check, all this stuff takes time & then you never know what kind of additional ground transport you may encounter to actually get you to the gate, ie, trams, buses, subway, conveyors, etc, etc, especially if you've never been to that particular airport.

The shuttle bus to the car rental zone is a small minibus. We were lucky and got there early. By the time we were boarding the shuttle the queue was huge, and you would have to wait for several buses to come and go before getting a ride. Possibly better to walk in those circumstances. After landing the person driving the rear steps to the plane had a nightmare, and everyone had left by the front doors before he managed to line up correctly with the plane. More funny than annoying though!

do take money out at the airport. do use the atm there. don't exchange cash--the rates are a little exhorbitent, and it's better to take thew couple dollar hit on the atm withdrawal. do, if you are hungry and have a bus or something you are waiting for, get the pizza at the end of the road--cheap, solid napolitano pizza. do feel free to use the wifi while you are in the airport. do arrive early for your flight--even though it's a small airport, a lot of the airlines don't have check-in kiosks, and i've waited over an hour on the line to check in.

We visited three places: Altamura, Matera and Naples. Altamura it's a small city, with beautiful Old Town and known as a capital of Italian bread. Matera doesn't need any recommendation since it has place on a unesco heritage list. This is the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region. Finally Naples is unique thanks to it's history, monuments, museums, but also thank's to it's kitchen. Naples has the greatest number of accredited stars from the Michelin Guide of any Italian city!

Car rental is well organised, there is a van that awaits and brings you swiflty to the car rental place where all the companies are based. Also drop off after the car rental is efficient and the van brings you outside the main terminal for departures. Departures: check in quite fast, love the family line when gojng through security. Naples has really invested in their airport in the recent years and they have everyrhing well organised incl check in using your phone. There is a varied range of shops and food and drink and some places to relax. Boarding was fast and on time. All in all a very good experience.

Do ‘t Be conned into extra insurance by car hire companies, do your own research and know what your cover is and would recommend taking excess insurance cover out from UK behind for peace of mind especially if driving in Italy. Make sure you embrace diversity in cultures and remember that is part of what travelling and exploiting new places is all about. Also try and learn a it of the local language, it goes a long way and you will get a lot more from a country and their people.

Remember to download Google Maps offline before your trip. And make sure all documents required for your route are downloaded to be accessible offline on your phone. Check your mobile operator roaming service charges. In 2018 some operators provide roaming services even cheaper than you would find a local sim card. This will help to keep a peace of mind.

There is a free shuttle service to the car rentals. When you come out on the main doors of the airport, you have to keep to the right and follow the car rental signs. It will lead you to the pick-up place, a shuttle bus will pick you up with your luggages. Naples is a quite busy city, the roads are quite full of cars, buses and mopeds, and road paintings are often missing. Do not worry, you just need to feel the rythm of the traffic and there will be no problems. Watch out for cars from side roads, they do not wait much to come out in front of you. To visit the Amalfi coast, Pompei and the Vesuvio a car rental is a must. Do not forget your credit cards, some people had difficulties with debit or some simpler bankcards. Have fun in Naples, it is a great place!

Naples proved, beating the many unpleasant stories of the city, to be a welcoming site to a family of 5 going on a holiday. The staff at the airport are helping and easily answer in English (a different story if you travel further into Italy) and the shuttle services were quick and easy to locate. Among many other locations to arrive at, only Naples boasts an infamous active volcano and a world renowed once buried city of Pompei which are visible over your plane windows and even more grand up close. Do not forget to visit the old parts of the city as it is blooming with Italian spirit. Glittering shops, colourful buildings and narrow streets are a real attraction. If you choose to travel to Naples, renting a car may be a good idea since Southern Italy is blessed with awe-inspiring beaches, often coped with small towns of equal beauty. Would travel again!
