Welcome to Naples, the birthplace of pizza. You wouldn’t be judged for travelling to the southern Italy city just to try its world famous pizza. But Naples has a lot to offer. Sprawling markets, the catacombs of San Genaro, the enchanting hidden city, and churches galore. Not to mention the looming Mount Vesuvius.
Naples International Airport is just a 20 minute drive from the city. If you want to explore the city and its neighbouring towns, beaches, and natural hotspots by car, you have plenty of options. There are several globally recognised car hire agencies, including Herz, Sixt, Europcar, Avis, Enterprise, and more. Watch out for budget friendly favourites like the aptly named Budget. It isn’t just the multinational car agencies, either. Italian car hire agencies like B-rent are also reputable firms and tend to be cheaper.
If you want something lighter on the wallet, your best bet is to hire a car in Naples. Hiring a car off-site generally means you avoid extra costs, such as ‘location-based fees’. Naples is the third biggest city in Italy, after Rome and Milan, so you’ll find plenty of places to pick up a car. There are several around the Maritime Station, including Budget and the Italian car hire firm, Autonoleggio. Venturing further into the city centre you’ll come across a few options of big name brands, including Hertz, Avis, and Europcar. However, the majority are independent, Italian agencies. There’s Locauto, Maggiore, Noleggio, and Italia Rent, to name a few. They’re all in the same area, so shopping around to get the best deal is easy. Also, you’ll see lots of scooters and vespas dotted around the city. If you want to travel like a local and zip around Napoli, there are plenty of specialist options, such as Napolirent.
The Old Town of Naples is the largest in Europe, and driving old roads is notoriously challenging. It’s one of the oldest cities in the world, so expect narrow alleyways and locals who have their own road laws. It’s tricky to find parking, too. Despite that, driving in Naples is often described as ‘pleasurable chaos’. Many people get around on vespas, so if you’re planning on just spending time in the city, this could be an easier option while also being unique.
There’s so much to see in Southern Italy, and the Amalfi Coast is high on many people’s wish lists. From Naples, you can get to Sorrento in just under an hour, but we recommend spending a few days hopping around the clifftop towns and seaside villages. There’s no doubt that driving yourself along the Amalfi Coast is the best way to see the much sought after destination, just be on guard for local drivers weaving in and out of lanes.
Whether you weave it into your Amalfi Coast trip or simply take a day trip, visiting Pompeii is an absolute must-see. There are tourist guides who can take you there with a group, but taking yourself means going by your own schedule. Roaming through the ancient streets is nothing short of amazing, many people actually recommend staying in Pompeii for a couple of nights to truly appreciate it. You can try to see the whole city, including all of its sites, in one day, but it’ll be extremely tiring. Especially on a hot day, as there’s little to no shade. Also, staying for a few nights means you can easily visit Pompeii’s destroyer, Mount Vesuvius. Attempting to visit Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii in one day would be extremely tiring, especially if you’re planning on hiking it! If you don’t want to stay over, hiring a car means you can easily spends a few days going back and forth from Naples - it’s just a short 25 minute drive.
