Genoa is found in the Liguria region of northwest Italy and serves the popular holiday destination city of Genoa. Genoa itself has a rich cultural history, serving as a trading hub since the early Middle Ages, and the city still thrives on trade to this day.
In addition to its historical significance, Genoa also has a strong culture surrounding tourism – and its beautiful architecture harks back to its golden age as one of the main trading cities in Europe. It is one of the most interesting cities to visit in all of Italy.
Genoa Airport is located in close proximity to the city of Genoa – a mere 8km, or 15 minutes’ drive. This makes it easy to commute from the airport to the city itself.
Due to its small size, Genoa Airport is not one of the busiest in the country but still processes around 1.2 million passengers every year. Airlines operate flights to other Italian cities including Olbia, Bari, Naples and Rome, as well as to European destinations including Barcelona, Amsterdam, Munich, Bucharest, London and Paris.
There are also numerous other Italian cities which are easy to reach by road from Genoa in less than 3 hours, including La Spezia, Alessandria, Parma, Milan and Turin. Nice (in France) is also only 190km away, and takes around two and a half hours to reach from Genoa Airport.
The majority of the roads linking Genoa Airport to the rest of the country are motorways, making them easy to navigate and simple to follow on a road map, SatNav or a smartphone map/GPS. In addition, motorways have the added benefit of having regular service stations along the way to take a break if you are driving long distances.
As an example, Milan is 400km away, and Bologna is 300km away from Genoa Airport, so naturally you will want to stop at least once on the way to these cities.
Driving around the local towns near Genoa and the city’s suburbs and outskirts presents very few problems, as most of the roads are easy to navigate.
However, the city centre can be difficult to drive around. Typical of many medieval-inspired Italian cities, the roads are narrow and can be tight to navigate cars around, especially larger cars such as people carriers or minivans. In addition, the city can become congested with traffic, particularly in the rush hours and during peak tourism season in the summer.
Like many other Italian cities, Genoa also has a ZTL (Limited Traffic Zone). This means that most vehicles are excluded from being able to drive in the city centre at certain times of the day, usually around the rush hour to avoid congestion and emissions in the city. The Genoese ZTL is in effect 24/7, 365 days a year, and is enforced by cameras throughout the city. Drivers who do not have the required permit to drive in the ZTL can face fines of up to €300.
Parking can also be an issue in Genoa – the historic Old Town area of the city centre is inaccessible via car. Outside of the ZTL, there are “Blue Area” parking systems in force. This means that non-residents can only park in these areas for a limited time.
However, because the city centre is easily accessible on foot, it is unlikely that you will need to do much (if any) driving in Genoa city centre.
Like with most other major cities, rush hour traffic can increase the amount of congestion on the roads. If you can avoid driving between 07:00–09:00 and then 16:00–19:00 you will have a much better driving experience in Genoa, and reduce the risk of being stuck in traffic jams. Here are some other useful tips on driving in and around Genoa.
As well as exploring the natural beauty of Genoa and the historic culture of the city itself through its numerous museums, exhibitions and more (and of course, sampling traditional Italian food and excellent Italian wine in its fantastic bars and restaurants), there is also lots to do outside of the city walls.
And with a hire car, you can explore what the local regions near Genoa and Genoa Airport have to offer.
While there are many quaint Italian towns and villages surrounding Genoa (such as Zoagli, Carasco, Mele and San Cipriano) which all have their own unique charms and appeals, there are also numerous larger cities within comfortable driving distance, such as Turin, Milan and Bologna.
For those wanting to explore further afield, Pisa can be reached within a 2-hour drive, Florence in 3 hours and Rome in 6. You can even visit the landlocked country of San Marino within a five-and-a-half-hour drive from Genoa Airport. In addition, the French cities of Monaco, Nice and Marseille can all be reached within four and a half hours.
Hiring a car from Genoa Airport is an excellent way to explore cities around the region of northern Italy and southern France, and even tick off 3 countries (Italy, San Marino and France) in as many days.
There are plenty of car hire suppliers at Genoa Airport. Some of these are some of the most recognisable names in the industry, such as Sixt, Budget, Hertz and Europcar, to name just a few, with others being smaller, more local suppliers.
