The rental car return at the airport is very easy. Just follow the signs to the parking garage where all the companies are located. The walk from there to the vapareto takes a bit more than 5 minutes. Buy your ticket for your destination right away and get in the que as lines can be long. You may find yourself waiting more than 30 minutes as we did. Don’t open the windows on the windward side of the boat—especially if it’s rough water.

Patience is helpful when picking up as there can be many arrivals trying to collect their vehicles at the same time. Remember that this is Florence, and every aspect of visiting this beautiful city is subject to being in a crowd!

Just one heads up. The Florence Airport's rental area is still under construction, with some areas just stone in preparation for paving. It can be difficult dragging you bag around the rental area.

See the countryside. The best food we had, without a doubt, was in the countryside. Though Florence, Sienna, and Lucca were lovely, the rolling hills and wineries of Tuscany were the best parts of our trip. If in San Casciano you need to eat at Antica Fiaschetteria del Chianti. It was the best meal we had and that's saying a lot considering all the places we ate at. Luiano Winery was our favorite winery.

Pay your parking fee before you go to the out gate. Very confusing if you haven't done that and try to do it at the gate, which you can't do. Push the help button and you will get unintelligible directions, which get angrier every time they're repeated.

Rent car ahead of time. Definitely rent GPS from rental car agency. Heed the GPS alarm telling of electronic speed monitoring. Locate (ahead of time) the bus station near Florence train station for shuttle to airport. Have rental agency explain how to get car into reverse. Be sure to travel autostrada, as well as smaller two lane roads in countryside to see beautiful Italy.
