Driving around Cagliari

Driving in Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, can be a convenient way to explore the city and the beautiful surrounding areas. However, knowing the driving conditions is important to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.

Driving tips in Cagliari

International Driving Permit: If you're not from a European Union country, consider obtaining an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your regular driver's license before arriving in Cagliari. It can be helpful if you plan to rent a car.

Plan Parking in Advance: Research parking options before you arrive, especially if your accommodation doesn't offer parking. Parking garages and lots on the outskirts of the city centre often provide more availability.

ZTL Zones: Be aware of Limited Traffic Zones (ZTL) in certain parts of the city centre. These areas are restricted to authorised vehicles, so only drive into them if your accommodation is within a ZTL and you have the necessary permits.

Drive Safely: Pay attention to local driving customs, such as yielding to drivers on your right at uncontrolled intersections and being cautious when merging onto highways.

Fuel Stations: Keep an eye on your fuel level and fill up when necessary, especially if you plan to drive in more remote areas, as gas stations can be less frequent.

Use GPS or Maps: Consider using a GPS device or smartphone navigation app to help you navigate the city and find your way to popular attractions and destinations.

Stay Informed: Stay up-to-date on local road conditions and traffic alerts, especially if you plan to take day trips outside Cagliari.

Be Patient: Traffic can get congested, so practice patience and allow extra time for your journeys, especially during busy tourist seasons.

Fun things to do in Cagliari

Cagliari Old Town: Wander the narrow streets of the historic Castello district, offering panoramic views and medieval charm.

Poetto Beach: Relax on the sandy shores of Poetto Beach, just a short bus ride from the city centre.

Roman Amphitheatre: Explore the well-preserved ruins of the Roman Amphitheatre, which dates back to the 2nd century.

Basilica di San Saturnino: Visit this ancient church, one of Sardinia's oldest, and discover its crypt.

Nora Archaeological Site: Take a day trip to the ancient Roman city of Nora, known for its well-preserved ruins and coastal beauty.

nice airport with lots of shops and restaurants, departures upstairs with bag drop in desk not very clearly marked so it can be bit confusing, no issues with anything at all, good experience

Allow plenty of time to get round Airport. It covers quite a large area. Have water or other drink on you as queuing can take a while e.g. Passport control on entering for EU arrivals channelled though automatic passport recognition stations and there were only 2 of these installed. Some people must have been queuing for an hour or more based on when I went through. Same issue queuing for rental car. One small building with far too many people in 30 degree heat is uncomfortable. Travelling into or from Gagliari centre? Get the Train! Very modern and comfy and run around every 15 mins . Only takes a few minutes and costs €1.30 pp. Make sure you stamp your ticket at machines before getting on train. Put ticket in right side of slot then slide to the left. You'll hear it click so will know it's been done. This is not intuitive or obvious!! Not a massive range of food/drink outlets when you get through security so may want to eat before you go through. Go to far end of departure lounge for the Lowenbrau stall. They have a good choice of food and beers with tables for diners out of sight behind where you place your order. The Bavarian style sausages are delicious!! Even better with a nice cold beer!! Check the screens for info as the announcements were not too clear for me to understand. Taking my own Satnav was valuable as hire car did not have one built in but it did take me into some windy streets. Make sure your maps are up to date before you fly or use offline maps.

Cagliari airport was pretty well set up. They had buses, trains, taxis, car hire and everything is really well (bilingually) sign posted. Bear in mind that the train station is a bit of a walk from the terminal. The connections are pretty regular so we didn’t have to wait long for a train. The ticket purchasing was a bit complicated because you have to ‘validate’ the ticket and the validating machine didn’t work. There was another but a local had to try and explain that to us! We got the train into Cagliari for a few nights then popped back to pick up the car for the rest of our holiday so we got to experience two sides of the transportation options! It was pretty quiet and everything was pretty straightforward.

Arrived at a quiet time, security check area still had all the rope barriers up making everyone walk back and forth! Totally unnecessary. Think of all the elderly people please. Water fountain available was good and very smooth and efficient service

Cagliari is a charming city - big and small at the same time with a lot of beautiful historical buildings and sights. I would also recommend renting a car to experience other parts of the lovely island. It's easy to drive in Sardegna, not too much traffic at all. A stunning place to see is the waterfalls of Sa Spendula in the mountains. Also a Pula/Nora beaches and ancient ruins are worth a visit. Try the small and cozy local restaurants in the villages - great food and authentic Sardinian atmosphere.

Sella del Diavola - A must see. Park the car just after the hotel/restaurant at Calamosca, and take the footpath up to the cliffs overlooking the Devil´s Saddle - Sella del Diavola. A must see with the declining sun over the city center of beautiful Cagliari

We had a great time. We spent the first part of our holiday in SW Sardegna and drove to a lot of interesting cultural/historical/beach sites. It was great to have a car to get out and see things. We were in Cagliari without a car, which really wasn't needed at that point.
