Hugging the Adriatic coast, life in Ancona is centred around its extensive port. Ferries, fishing boats, cruise ships, and cargo ships dock and depart from the port, rendering the city a hub of international trade. While it’s certainly a huge part of Ancona and the city’s locals, to write it off as a standard port city would be to dismiss its beaches, history, and architecture. The port itself is historical, too, being a pivotal player in Greek colonisation and Roman rule.
As the capital of the Marche region, Ancona Airport is the largest. The airport was formally named Ancona Raffaello Sanzio Airport – dedicated to the local famed painter and architect – but is now generally referred to as Marche Airport or Ancona Airport. It’s a hub of business, domestic, and international travellers, serving as the gateway to the Central Italian region. Over half a million passengers transit through the airport per year, and the numbers are consistently growing.
Ancona Airport is positioned around 17 kilometres from the heart of the city. It takes between 20 minutes to travel by car, and the journey is generally straightforward and well-sign-posted. The slightly longer but more scenic route takes you along the Adriatic – the perfect welcome to Ancona when you leave the airport. Alternatively, you can hop on the train from the airport’s Castelferretti Station to Ancona Station. This also takes around 20 minutes.
While Ancona Airport is the largest in Marche, it’s a relatively mid-sized airport. Therefore, there is a limited fleet. If you have your eye on a vehicle, and you know when you are travelling, we recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
Not only does booking in advance online secure the vehicle, but it also guarantees a much lower price than if you chose to pay a walk-in price. You can also seamlessly change your booking on the Holiday Cars ‘My Booking’ page up until 27 hours before your pick-up time. Alternatively, Holiday Cars customer service can amend your booking up to 48 hours before.
Don’t wait – book affordable, reliable car hire with Holiday Cars today.
The highways surrounding Ancona are generally flat and easy to navigate, with gorgeous coastal views. Driving around the city is pretty straightforward, too. Ancona is not as busy as other Italian cities, such as Rome or Milan, so there is less traffic. However, like any city, traffic can build during peak times – such as 7.30 am to 9 am and 5 pm to 6 pm. And there are limited traffic zones – or ZTLs – which don’t permit vehicles without certain permissions to drive through. For example, you might see residents, emergency vehicles, taxis, and delivery drivers driving in the ZTLs, but you should avoid driving there entirely. The main ZTL in Ancona is the area surrounding Piazza del Plebiscito, a baroque, cafe-filled square. Look out for one-way streets, too.
General rules and tips for driving around Ancona include:

The cathedral is a shining beacon of Ancona. Its 13th-century dome stands above the city’s skyline, with sweeping views across Ancona. While the cathedral has origins from the 6th century, most of its construction was during the 12th and 13th centuries. After exploring the cathedral, wander downhill along Piazza Anfiteatro, where you’ll see the remains of a Roman amphitheatre.

As one of the most important museums in the region, the National Archaeology Museum of the Marches is worth a visit. Housed in Palazzo Ferretti, a 16th-century palazzo with fresco-adorned ceilings, the historical setting makes it all the more poignant. But the artefacts on show here go way past the 16th century, with flints from the Neolithic period, and bronze statues from 50-30 BC.

After your flight, you might want to hold off on sightseeing and focus on the important stuff – relaxing on a beach. There are several beaches along the Ancona coastline, and while Passetto is the city’s main beach, it takes the same amount of team to reach that and Spaggia Urbani – around 30 minutes by car. This locally loved beach is backed by a huge white rock, which is characterised by its natural sea cave.
