Its original construction dates back to the late 10th century, and through the centuries it suffered extensive damage that threatened its complete disappearance until the decision was made to restore it. Those tunnels under the city are a highlight. The Familistère de Guise is a must-see museum housed in the compound that industrialist Jean-Baptiste André Godin constructed for his utopian cooperative community just outside of town.
