About Car Hire at Geneva Ferney-Voltaire Airport

In the east of France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region sits the commune of Ferney-Voltaire. It is located between the Jura Mountains and the Swiss border and is part of Geneva's metropolitan region. From 1759 until 1778, Voltaire was a resident in Ferney, where he is frequently called "the patriarch." He had a significant impact on the community. He erected a chapel and established cottage businesses that produced some of the best potters and watchmakers in contemporary France. Tonnes of hidden treasures are waiting to be discovered and experienced around Ferney-Voltaire, whether you like hiking or cycling.

Formally known as Genève Aéroport, the Geneva Ferney-Voltaire Airport (GVF) can be found 4 kilometres to the northwest of Geneva's downtown area. The airport is located partially in the French commune of Meyrin and partially in the Swiss commune of Grand-Saconnex. Its northern boundary runs along the Swiss-French border, so both countries use this airport. In 2014, more than 15 million passengers travelled through its terminals. The airport serves as a hub for Swiss International Air Lines and easyJet Switzerland, which offer short- and long-haul flights to cities across Europe, North America, China, and the Middle East. The busiest routes out of Geneva Airport are to London, Paris, and Amsterdam.

Hire car companies like Hertz, Avis, Enterprise, and Budget all have locations at the airport, making it easy for travellers to get around. To get the best rates, shop around and book your rental car in advance. The French sector is located on the second floor of the Arrivals Hall. To get to the French area, just follow the "destination France" signage (to the right of the terminal near the Air France ticket counters) after collecting your luggage. You’ll find the desks of several car hire companies in the Arrivals Hall.

1. Best to use a credit card for your deposit that does NOT have a charge for foreign currency. The deposit is returned, but the bank charges are NOT! 2. Make sure before leaving the desk that you have the GPS addres of the petrol station which is just before the junction you turn off to return the car. This makes it is easy to find the French side for returning to Alamo hiring. 3. On arrival in the airport, on the Swiss side, make sure you keep handy you boarding pass of your FINISHED journey to be able to cross over to the French side to pick up your car. You are asked to provide this to the French boarder Police. 4. Be ready to be able to smile back to those that smile at you, because that is what you CAN expect!!!

When renting a car at Geneva Airport, it's worth considering going to the French Sector of the airport to rent a car, provided that you have no intention of driving on Swiss motorways. It is much cheaper to rent a car that does not have a pre-purchased motorway vignette that is needed to drive on Swiss motorways. The cost for a 2020 vignette is CHF40. If you're heading to the French ski resorts, you really don't need to be on the Swiss motorway system. When looking for an airport hotel it can be useful to stay in Ferney Voltaire, which is in France. This will usually work out to be a bit cheaper than staying in a Swiss hotel. Ferney Voltaire is an easy drive of only 5-10 minutes away from the Car Rental returns in the French Sector.
